Aksar Shab-e-tanhai Main is a poem penned by Nadir Kakorvi (born 1857). The poem was made famous by performances by Reshma in the 20th century.  Interestingly, the inspiration for this poem came from the English/Irish poem "Oft in the stilly night," authored by the 18th century Irish poet Thomas Moore. And now I write about this in the 21st century.

The poem is about the memories of the speaker, who recalls moments from his past in a melancholic and nostalgic tone. The poem's central theme is the passage of time and the fleeting nature of youth and happiness.

The speaker remembers his youth, particularly his love for someone who is no longer with him. He reflects on the sadness and loneliness he feels in the present, longing for the past and the happier times he shared with his beloved. The poem's overall message is that life is short and we should cherish the moments we have with the people we love, as these memories will sustain us through the difficult times.

Lyrics: Transilerated in English

Aksar shab-e-tanhai mein, Kuch dair pehlay neend say
Bantay haiN sham-e-zindagi, Aur Daaltay haiN roshni
Meray dil-e-sud chaak per...

Woh bachpan aur wo saadgi, Woh rona woh hansna kabhi
Phir woh jawani kay mazay, Woh dil lagi woh qehqahay
Woh ishq woh ehd-e-wafa, Woh wada or woh shukriya
Woh lazzat-e-bazm-e-tarb, Yaad aati hain ik aik sab.......
Dil ka kanwal jo roz-o-shab, rehta shagufta tha so ab
Os ka yeh ab tar haal hai, ik sabza-e-pamaal hai
Ik phool kumlaya hua, sookha hua bikhra hua
Ronda parda hai khaak per...

Yunhi shab-e-tanhai main, kuch dair pehlay neend say
Bantay hain shama-e-baykasi, aur Daltay hain roshni
Un hasraton ki qabr per...

jo aarzooain pehlay theen, phir Gham say hasrat ban gaein
Gham dooston ke faut ka, un ki jawaan mout ka
lay daikh sheeshay main meray, un hasraton ka khoon hai
jo gardish-e-ayyam say, jo qismat-e-nakaam say
ya aish-e-gham anjaam say, marg-e-but-e-gulfaam say
khud dil mein meray mer gaein, kis tarha paaon main hazeen

yun mujh say pehlay uthh gaye, jis tarha taaier (birds) baaGh ke
ya jesay phool aur pattiyan, gir jain sab qabl khizan
aur Khushk reh jaye shajr...

us waqt tanhai meri, bun ker mujassam baykasi
TooTay kiwaaR or khiRkiyaN, chhat ke Tapaknay ke nishaN
pernaalay haiN rozan nahin, yeh hall hain aaNgan nahin
perday nahiN, chilman nahin, ik shama tak roshan nahin
ujra hua weeran ghar...

aksar shab-e-tanhai main, kuch dair pehlay neend say
guzri hui dil-chuspian, beetay huay din aish k
bantay haiN shama-e-zindagi, aur Daltay haiN roshni
meray dil-e-sud chaak per...

Oft, in the stilly night

- Thomas Moore

Oft, in the stilly night,
Ere slumber’s chain has bound me,
Fond memory brings the light
Of other days around me;
The smiles, the tears,
Of boyhood’s years,
The words of love then spoken;
The eyes that shone,
Now dimm’d and gone,
The cheerful hearts now broken!
Thus, in the stilly night,
Ere slumber’s chain hath bound me,
Sad memory brings the light
Of other days around me.

When I remember all
The friends, so link’d together,
I’ve seen around me fall,
Like leaves in wintry weather;
I feel like one
Who treads alone
Some banquet-hall deserted,
Whose lights are fled,
Whose garlands dead,
And all but he departed!
Thus, in the stilly night,
Ere slumber’s chain has bound me,
Sad memory brings the light
Of other days around me.

Hayo rabba naiyo lagda dil mera - Lyrics

hayo rabba naiyo lagda dil mera
nayiyo lagda dil mera
sajjana baaj hoya hanera
hayo rabba naiyo lagda dil mera

jogi baitha been bajaave
dil mere nu chain na aave
nas pai sapni rove saperaa

daso ni ilaaj koi tutte hoye dil da
karaan ki bahanaa dilbar naiyo mildaa
chaar chafere hoya haneraa

Translation - hayo rabba naiyo lagda dil mera

The girls of Bawaar don't wear a nose ring
I have forgotten but you must never forget

O God, my heart is restless
without love there is darkness
O God, my heart is restless

The yogi sits and plays his flute
but my heart remains worried
the snake runs away, the yogi cries

tell me the medicine for a broken heart
what excuse can I make when I can't find love
all around there is darkness

Hayo Rabba Naiyo Lagda Dil Mera
Kitte nain na jorin

Ik Tainu Maingeya-ee Rab Kolon
koi Hor duwaavaan mangiyaan nai
Luk luk ke taknaa sanjnaa noo
dilbar e adaavaan changiyaan nai

Teri Mast Jawani luteya eh
Mainu Phad dukhaan wich suteya eh
Sad jaawaavan meriyaan akhiyaan o
oh taa pyaar tere wich rangiyaan nai

I have asked you from God
there is no other prayer I have
you look at me from some hidden place
sweetheart

Your youth has enraptured me
It grasped me and throw me in sorrows
Let those eyes burn that aren't colored in your love

tera roop sona dil bhaunda eh
vakh tethon hon na honda eh
teri yaad baaj mere mehbooba
kadi raataan wi khaliyaan langiyaan nai

tu masjid ehn tu mandri ehn
tu kaaba dil de andar ehn
lai jaavan jediyaan akhiyaan noo
oh te pyaar tere wich rangiyaan nai
Kitte nain na joreen is a timeless song of longing, simple on the surface but spiritually profound. It’s a lover’s plea to avoid the agony of separation, yet like much of Reshma’s work, it’s also the soul’s cry for the Divine.

The refrain Kitte nain na joreen (don’t set your eyes on another) speaks to fidelity in both human and divine love. In Sufi tradition, the eyes are gates for attention—to stray is to scatter the heart; to stay fixed on the Beloved is to remain whole.

Tenu wasta Khuda da (for God’s sake) isn’t just an expression—it’s a sacred appeal, the exiled soul begging for reunion. Reshma sang this longing not as an idea but as a lived wound. The world, she suggests, thrives on separating lovers—whether earthly or mystical. The song’s answer? Resist. Guard the connection. Return.

Even the pain—tears flooding, the body weakening—carries devotion. In Sufi poetry, such suffering isn’t defeat but proof of love’s sincerity.

So while Aa Sajna can be heard as a lover’s lament, it’s equally the spirit’s call to God: Burn the walls between us. Keep your gaze steady. For God’s sake, come back. And perhaps its a call to the heart - don't get yourself attached with others, the temporary. Focus on the timeless.

Aa sajna rall katheyan bahiye
Te vichoreyan nu agg laiye

Manzoor mian gham dilan vich wasde

Haye kite vichreya na mar jaiye

Come love, lets sit together
Lets burn this separation
Lest this sorrow in the heart
die because of separation

Kitte nain na joreen, Kitte nain na joreen

Kitte nain na joreen, Mera maan ta toreen

Tenu wasta khuda da, Wagaan watna nu moreen
Kitte nain na joreen, Kitte nain na joreen

Don't set your eyes on anyone else
For God's sake, come back to me

Pyar waleyan nu naio vekh sakda zamana

Kehri gall tu vichhora evain labhda bahana

This world cannot see lovers
Finds excuses to separate
Don't listen to others, and forget me
For God's sake, come back to me

Kenu khol ke sunavan, dukh dil dian gallan

Who should I open my heart to
I sigh, I cry
I am in your hands, don't throw me away
For God's sake, come back to me

Mainu jhalleyan bana ke, aape mall laye kinare

You made me crazy, and then left
My days pass only with your memory
Dont make me cry, don't squeeze my blood
For God's sake, come back to me
