I am reading Emily Dickinson's
journey from plank to plank
and wondering ...
Even we walk life like this now!
As if we were walking
on a boardwalk
in the dark of
the night
From plank to plank
Knowing not which plank
will break and end this journey
we walk life between
on a boardwalk
in the dark of
the night
From plank to plank
Knowing not which plank
will break and end this journey
we walk life between
the two vast unknowns:
the unending sea and skies
We walk slow
Cautiously and fearfully
knowing that we are finite
knowing
the unending sea and skies
We walk slow
Cautiously and fearfully
knowing that we are finite
knowing
that the only thing
that is known between
the skies and the seas we walk
the only certainty we have
is the fear of our end
this sums the breadth
of our experience:
the penultimate
scary walk of
the only certainty we have
is the fear of our end
this sums the breadth
of our experience:
the penultimate
scary walk of
our life.

I stepped from Plank to Plank
A slow and cautious way
The Stars about my Head I felt
About my Feet the Sea.
I knew not but the next
Would be my final inch —
This gave me that precarious Gait
Some call Experience.

“I stepped from Plank to Plank…” (875)
I stepped from Plank to Plank
A slow and cautious way
The Stars about my Head I felt
About my Feet the Sea.
I knew not but the next
Would be my final inch —
This gave me that precarious Gait
Some call Experience.
