Man Atkeya Beparwah De Naal - Listening and Singing this kaafi by Shah Hussain today ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkYN2XlK1Vg

Raag Jaunpuri

Lyrics and Translation in English

Man Atkeya Beparwah De Naal
Us Deen Duni De Shah De Naal

My soul is entangled with the indifferent one
Lord of all things visible and invisible

Qazi Mullah Matti Dainde
Kharay Siyyane Rah Dasende
Ishq Kee Lagay Rah De Naal

Judges and clerics are full of advice,
The righteous and wise show you the path,
But love itself needs no guidance

Nadiyon Paar Ranjhan Da Thana
Keetay Qol Zaroori Jana
Mintaan Karran Mallah De Naal

Ranjha’s dwelling is across the stream,
Having given my word, I must go
I will beseech the boatman

Kahe Husain Faqeer Sayein Da
Darr Te Cholian Addiyan Mein
Uss Deen Duni De Shah De Naal

I am a novice, what do I know of committed love?
The separation pulls at my sinews
Says Hussain, Gods faqir, I spread my robe before you
Lord of all things visible and invisible

Kahe Husain Faqeer Numanrha
Sache Sahib Nu Mein Jana
Aurhak Kam Allah De Naal

Says Hussain, the worthless faqir,
I know the true Lord
In the end I will meet my Creator

Additional Poetry - Added by Nusrat

Wasdi Hardam Mann Mere Vich, Soorat Yaar Pyare Di
Apne Shah Nu Ap Rajawan, Hajat Nai Pasaray Di
Kahe Husain Faqeer Numanha, Theewan Khaak Daware Di

The image of the precious beloved lives constantly within my soul
I can please my love alone, I need no display
Says Hussain the worthless faqir, I am the dust on your doorstep

Sajan Bin Raatan Hoian Waddiyan
Ranjha Jogi Mein Jogiani
Kamli Kar Kar Saddyan
Sajan Bin Raatan Hoian Waddiyan
Mein Han Ayani Nooh Kee Jana
Birhon Tanawan Gaddiyan

Without my beloved the nights are long,
Ranjha is a saint and I am his follower
He has driven me senseless

Listening to Swarn Nooran this evening, the grandmother of the now popular duo Nooran sisters.  I have great things about how modest they are from Rajesh Prasanna, my flautist partner in crime. Here is another example where the original punjabi song is much more beautiful than the new hindi version (below) despite the better recording techniques and everything. Something about the soul of the song. Lyrics and Translation of the original song are below.

Lyrics

Translation

He used to be my lover once
today he is near but silent
my love, since you don't talk to me
I have restrained my heart

I swear by god you are still my love
don't play with me
my skin may glow
my eyes are moist
the wounds you gave me
if you had one you’d know
says ghulam farid, give your heart to one
who knows its worth for sure

live my dear one live, even if with someone else
no matter if you are not mine today, some day you were

i worship the paths on which you set foot
all i want is to see you smile
my joy is your smile, who cares for anything else
live my dear one…

for your happiness I’d give the world
may you not be unhappy even in a dream
I can drink my sorrows like a sweet drink
live my dear one...

they say no good comes of sorrow
wha, my lover, he left
my prayer was not accepted
my forehead’s bruised from bowing down
never seen anyone so indifferent
he laughed to see me cry
says gulam farid, coax a thousand times
but he may never speak his heart

i swear for your sake
i can die
every moment of my waking hours
i just pray for you
no sorrow should touch you in this wide world
live my dear one...

live on in my eyes, if you wont speak
i am yours, you’re mine, i can beat drums to say
says nirdhan that the flame of love
shall always burn as bright
live my dear one live...

Lyrics in Punjabi

Today, I find myself immersed in the enchanting melodies of "Mai ni main kinon aakhaan," a mesmerizing Punjabi Sufi song penned by Shah Hussain. As I listen to this captivating composition, it evokes memories of Guru Gobind Singh's soul-stirring Mittar Pyare Nu. I am also reminded of a couple of poems by Ghulam Fareed and Sultan Bahu mentioned below.

Shah Hussain, a revered poet of the 16th century, is known for his poignant verses that encapsulate the anguish of separation. His poetry delves deep into the human experience of longing and heartache, particularly in the context of love and spiritual connection.

In this poignant poem, Shah Hussain cries out, "O mother, who should I tell this pain of separation?" These words convey a profound sense of despair and helplessness, as the poet grapples with the overwhelming agony caused by separation from a beloved.  In this poem, Shah Hussain goes beyond expressing his pain of separation and delves deeper into his emotional state. He articulates the profound sense of isolation that accompanies his suffering, lamenting that there is no one who can truly comprehend the depth of his agony. This realization adds another layer to his anguish.

Lyrics & Translation - Maye Ni Main Kinu Aakhan

Mai ne main kinon aakhaan,
Dard vichore da hall ni

O mother O mother, who do I tell,
this pain of separation

Dhuan dhukhay mairay murshid wala,
Jaan phoulaan taan laal ni

My Master's fire smoulders,
If I poke, its red hot

Soolan mar dewani keeti,
Birhoun peya saday khayal

Driven mad with spikes,
Pain of separation fills my thoughts

Dukhan di roti, Soolaan da saalan,
Aahen da baalan baal

Bread of sadness, sauce of spikes,
Make a fire of laments

Jungle bailay phiraan
Dhoudaindi ajay na paayo lal

Wandered jungles and deserts,
But not found the ruby

Ranjhan Ranjhan phiraan dhoudaindi,
Ranjhan mairay nal

wander looking for Ranjhan Ranjhan,
But Ranjhan is with me

Kahay Hussain faqeer nimanaa,
Shoh milay taan theevan nihaal

Says Hussain the poor faqeer,
Meeting God would be ecstasy

Kulli rah vich pai asañ tere - Lyrics and Translation

Kulli rah vich pai asañ tere
Te aanda janda takda rahveeñ

I have placed my hut on your way
When you come and go you can see me

Go away priest, let me put a tilak on my forehead
let me put a tilak on my forhead and go to the house of prostitutes
My honor doesn't diminish by become a prostitute, let me dance and make my love

Bhulla to kaudi ho ja, watta munh na lagge

Don't have ego on your money
Truth or False will come out in front of the true knower
Say complete and weigh complete, so you are not head on your head
Bullah Become a stone so a weight doesn't have to deal with your face

Kulli rah vich pai asañ tere
Te aanda janda takda rahveeñ

Similar Song: Chuk Charkha

Beloved, to catch a glimpse of Thee, I place my charkha in the lane outside.
People think I spin cotton,  but I truly weave the thread of Thy memory.

Lyrics And  English Translation :

Ve aa ve Mahi
Teku sad pai ve maaran
Ve tu mulak vasa leya keda
Panchhi vi ud gharan nu aa gaye sajna
Keo chit nai karda Tera

O my Darling come to me,
I’m calling upon you.
Which country have you been residing in?
The birds have come back to their nests O Beloved.
Does your heart want to come back too?

Haal ve Rabba
Lutti heer ve fakir di
Haal ve rabba
Maari teriyan gama di

O my God,
A Fakir’s Heer has been stolen,
O my God,
I am dying in your sorrow.

Aar vi bela par vi bela
Vich bele de jaavan
Aa miyan ranjha Jogi ban ke
Jind di Khol gamava
Luti heer ve fakir di
Haal ve rabba

This way there is a field, that way there is field
I go into the field
Where Ranjha in disguise of a Jogi/ Monk comes,
And reveals his life of grief and sorrow,
Because the Fakir’s Heer is lost,
O my God/Rabb.

Aar vi bela par vi bela
Bela kinne banaya
Aa miyan ranjha Bach ke chaliye
Chacha kedon aaya
Luti heer ve fakir di
Haal ve rabba

Either this field or that field,
Who has made the fields?
O Ranjha lets escape secretly,
Because Chacha/ Uncle Kedon has come,
And the Fakir’s Heer has been stolen,
O my God/Rabb

Birha birha aakhiye
Burha tun sultan
Farida jit tan birhon na upjai
Jo tan jaan Masaan

Sorrow, Sorrow they say
You are the emperor of sorrows
That body that doesn't have sorrow
that body is actually a grave

Ek din bulbul chaman de andar,
Koyal nu puchan lagi
Ve raat dine tu reh kurlandi
Kiss Surat di thaggi
Kisde sog kitta rang kala
Ja hai kisdi vaggi
Hashmat Shah aage ro ke misra
Aiyo hi aakhan lagi

Luti heer ve fakir di
Haal ve rabba

One day the bulbul in the garden,
The cuckoo asked,
“Day and Night you sing,
Who has deceived you?
In whose grief have you turned black as charcoal,
You weep with tears continuously
In front of Hashmat Shah
With tears in your eyes you say,

And the Fakir’s Heer has been stolen,
O my God/Rabb.”

One interpretation of this song found on the internet (not written by me):

This is the real Rohi, that inspired Shafqat Amanat Ali.

Jindari Luti Te Yaar Sajjan is written by Khawaja Ghulam Farid.

Rohi is the name used for the Southern Punjab desert which was Khwaja's abode. And so he shows a vivid imagery of desert in most of his works

As the word 'Rohi' means desert, the theme of the song is, of course, the pain of separation that the girl goes through, for her beloved lives in a desert, far away from her, far away from her place, her motherland, her 'watan'..

oo jindari luti te yaar sajan
kadi mod muhaara te aa watan - X 3 '

Jindari luti..She feels that her life has no meaning and she has no existence without him..She feels all her happiness is ruined in his absence..She feels she cannot live without him..She sings for him, for her sajan (beloved)..She wants him to come back to her watan, his watan, their watan.. She wants them to be together again..

teri rohi di ajab bahaar dise
jithe main nimani da yaar base
ho uthe ashiq lakh te hazaar base
ik main numani duja be watan

She has never been to 'rohi', the desert.. but she thinks about the place all the time..Rohi,in spite of being full of nothing else but sand and thorns, seems to be absolutely beautiful to her.. Rohi seems to have that 'bahaar', the scenic beauty, the peace, the joy, the calmness, because its in that desert that her beloved lives...

She feels that there must be many lovers living in the desert, there must be many lovers all over the world, living together happily.. She feels unlucky for the fact that they cannot be together.. "ik main numani duja be watan"

ho jindari luti hai yaar sajan
kadi mod muhaara te aa watan - X 2

aa ve aa, kadi aa ve aa
meri ujadi jok wasa ve aa
main rondi nu gall la ve aa
sadh gaya tati da tan badan

She wants him to come back, desperately waiting for him, she calls him back, she wants to see him, to feel him.. Her life, her happiness, everything about her is incomplete and meaningless without him.. She has those tears of pain in her eyes.. She cannot see anything other than the rohi and her beloved.. She imagines, n she wishes him to come back, to wipe off her tears, to make her smile..She simply wants to be with him, to feel his presence, to be in his arms, to forget everything else and to be lost in his love..

ho jindari luti hai yaar sajan
kadi mod muhaar te aa watan - X 2

teri rohi di ajab bahaar dise
jithe main nimani da yaar base
ho uthe ashiq lakh te hazaar base
ik main numaani duja be watan

ho jindari luti hai yaar sajan
kadi mod muhaara te aa watan - X 2

teri rohi de kandere te daliyan
meri dukh karandiyan waaliyan
ho asaan raatan dukhan diyan jhaliyan
ik main nimani duja be-watan

The thorns and weeds of the desert seem to give that pain, that sadness to her.. On one hand, she sees the 'bahaar', because he lives there, but on the other hand, she detests everything related to the desert, for it reminds her of the pain of separation, for it makes her cry every day and every night.. She spends sleepless nights, thinking about the desert, thinking about him, crying for him.. She wants to get rid of these tears, she wants him to come back to her, to their place, their 'watan'

Its an amazing song, with Shahida's beautiful voice and absolutely great lyrics..Some songs tell us how some lives simply revolve around a simple 4 letter word called love..When they are together, the whole world seems beautiful to them, they are in love with their lives.. but if, unfortunately, they are separated, everything becomes hopelessly meaningless...This song describes the same.. My favorite lines are "teri rohi di ajab bahaar dise, jithe main numani da yaar base" .. Absolutely beautiful !! Sometimes, all you need in life is, someone to be with you!!

Krishna's Cosmic Flute Playing

Bulleh Shah in a kafi says, "You are playing a surprising, wondrous, flute O Krishna." Bulleh Shah delves into the metaphorical significance of Krishna's flute-playing. Bulleh Shah's Krishna has all-encompassing control and influence over the world. Bulleh Shah's analogy of the flute-playing as a cosmic symphony signifies that every occurrence and event in the world is a unique phrase in Krishna's flute playing.

Krishna, in this metaphor, becomes the cosmic conductor orchestrating the grand symphony of existence. Each aspect of life, from the tiniest occurrence to the most monumental event, is a manifestation of Krishna's divine play. Bulleh Shah's words shed light on the interconnectedness of all things, highlighting how the universe harmoniously moves to the rhythm set by Krishna's metaphorical flute.

Yet, despite Krishna's omnipresent influence, humans often remain oblivious to this cosmic melody. Bulleh Shah laments that humanity fails to recognize Krishna's presence in the tapestry of existence. This lack of recognition is likened to the flute's wondrous and unparalleled music playing in the background of our lives, captivating everything it touches, yet often going unnoticed by our distracted hearts and minds.

Bulleh Shah's thought encourages us to cultivate awareness and attunement to the underlying harmony of the universe. By recognizing Krishna's hand in every facet of existence, we can experience a profound shift in our perspective. Just as the intricacies of a musical composition can only be truly appreciated by attentive ears, acknowledging Krishna's presence allows us to perceive the hidden connections and purpose in the events of our lives.

This perspective echoes across spiritual traditions, urging us to look beyond the surface of life and uncover the deeper meanings and truths. The metaphor of Krishna's flute-playing aligns with Sufi teachings that emphasize seeking the divine in every experience and recognizing the oneness that underlies all things.

In essence, Bulleh Shah's reflection prompts us to attune ourselves to the cosmic symphony, the ever-present orchestration of Krishna's flute-playing. It invites us to shift our focus from the mundane distractions of life and attune our senses to the subtle notes of divinity reverberating throughout creation. Just as the notes of Krishna's flute are wondrous, surprising, and unparalleled, so too is the revelation of the interconnectedness and spiritual significance of all that occurs around us.

This Kafi reminds me of Bhagat Namdev shabad Sabhai Ghat Raam Bolai. It also reminds me of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's song, Tum ek gorakh dhanda ho. It also reminds me of Maulana Rumi's Har lehza ba shakl aan and Bhai Nandlal Goya's couplet Gaahe Sufi Gaahe Zahid.

In the Home of the Wind
- Shivpreet Singh

Krishna lifts a flute.
Wind finds a home.

As wind in reeds,
fields begin to sing.
Wheat bows, rises, bows again—
a whole village breathing.

Like a river over stones,
its tune rounds every edge,
polishing anger to light.
Fish keep time with silver fins;
boats forget their oars.

I listen until my name thins
to water, then to wind.

Rumi's Rubai

Khushk taar o khushk chob o khushk post
(dry string and dry wood and dry hide)
az koja mi ayadee(n) aawaaz e dost(from where comes the beloveds voice)
neze taar o neze chob o neze post(not from string and not wood and not hide)
khud bakhud mi ayadee(n) aawaaz e dost
(from itself comes the beloved’s voice)
- Rumi

saanaa-e-saazast andar taar o post
zee(n) sabab mi ayadee(n) aawaaz e dost

Parched hide, dried wood, frayed string
From where does the beloved’s voice ring?
Not the drum, nor the wood, or the string
From itself does the beloved’s voice spring

- Translated by Omer Shafee

This ghazal written by Shaad Azeemabadi (1846 - 1927) showcases the journey of a lover who is imploring his beloved to join him. Or perhaps its a journey of self discovery.

Dhoondo Ge Agar Mulkon Mulkon
Milne Ke Nahin Nayaab Hain Hum
Tabeer Hai Jiski Hasrat-O-Gham
Aye Humnafaso Woh Khwaab Hain Hum

Even if you search from nation to nation
You won’t find me, for I’m a rare jewel.
With a willingness to handle grief and sorrow,
O friends! I am an embodiment of that dream.

Ik na dhaween dil bande da
Mera Rabb dilan vich rehnda

Parayi soorat nu vekh ke raazi te raho

Iss da Jo malik aaya mere sar mein joote laga gaya
Mere malik nu gussa aaya, o jhagra mita gaya

Ve sauda iko jeha , dil dena te dil mangna ve sauda iko jeha

Ishq wale vehre sajna buta pyar wala laya e
Main patte patte utte Tera naa likhwaya e
Ohnu sambh sambh ke rakhna ve sauda iko jeha
Dil dena te dil mangna ve sauda iko jeha

Mein naiyon takna we, tenu ada bua toke
Dekh mein tenu chaddan samne khiloke
Tu jis galiyon langda sauda ikko jeya

Tu mera meri sajna ban gayon taqdeer we
Tu mera ranjhaa te main teri heer we
Tere pyar wich tanman rangnan we sauda ikko jeya

Man too shudam too man shudi,
Mun tan shudam too jaan shudi.
Taakas na goyad baad azeen,
Man deegaram tu deegari.

I become you, you become me
Let body be me and soul you be
So no one can say hereafter
I'm different, you're different

For full ghazal, see Ay chehra-e zeba-e tu rashk-e butan-e azari
Aao saiyo ral deyo ni vadhaai
Men var paaya raanjha maahi

Ajj taan roz mubaarak chaddeya
Raanjha saade vedde vaddeya.
Hath khundi, modde kambal dhareya,
Chaakaan vaali shakal banayi.
Aao saiyo ral deyo ni vadhai

Mukat gauwaan de vich rulda
Jangal juuhaan de vich rulda
Hai koi allah de val bhulda,
Asal haqiqat khabar na kai.
Aao saiyo ral deyo ni vadhai

Bulle shah ik sauda keeta
Peeta zehar piyaala peeta,
Na kujh laha tota leeta.
Dard dukhaan di gathari chaahi
Aao saiyo ral deyo ni vadhai

Come friends come
Congratulate me
I have found my love
Come congratulate me

An auspicious day has dawned
My lover has come to my courtyard
In his hand he has a staff.
A blanket covers his shoulders.
He is so humble, so lowly
Friends, come congratulate me

His crown rolls among the cattle.
In pastures and forests he wanders.
Could anyone tell he's the Lord?
No one can tell who really is he
Friends, come congratulate me

Bulleh Shah struck a deal
He drank a cup of poison
He didn't care for gain or loss
He picked up a sack of grief
Friends, come congratulate me

Also: Avoh ni saiyo ral devoh ni vadhayi
Main var paaya raanjhan maahi

Ab Lagan Lagi - Translation

I long for you, what can be done?
I cannot live, I cannot die.

Listen to my plea,
Night or day, I have no peace.
Not another moment can I exist without you.
I long for you, what can be done?

This separation-torment is unending!
Does anyone have a cure for it?
If I do not see him, how will I live?
I long for you, what can be done?

Says Bulha, I am in great distress,
O please find a remedy.
How can I endure such pain?
I long for you, what can be done?

Lyrics - Ab Lagan Lagi

Ab lagan lagi ki kariye
Na Jee Sakiye Na mariye

| Dard andar da andar saRay
| Bahar karan ta ghayal hu
| Haal assan da kevein janan
| Jo dunya te mayal hu
| Bahar samndar ishqe wala
| Har dam rehnda hayal hu
| Pohanch hazoor asaan nahi
| Asan naam tere day sayal hu

Tum suno humari baina
Aaye raat dinay nahi chaina
Hun pe bin palak na sariye

Ae agan birhon di bhari
Koi humri preet nivaari
Bin darshan kaisay tariye

| murshad da dedar ha meeno

Bulla pai museebat bhari
Koi karo humari kaari
Aehoje dukh kaisay jariye

Here is a poem about a Sufi saint, named Ibrahim ibn Adham (c.730 - c.782 CE) from what is now Afghanistan, written by an English Christian poet, Leigh Hunt (1784-1959). Rumi extensively described the legend of Ibrahim in his Masnavi. More on his biography below.

The poem "Abou Ben Adhem" by Leigh Hunt explores the power of love and compassion. The protagonist, Abou Ben Adhem, wakes up one night to find an angel in his room, writing down the names of those who love the Lord. When he inquires if his name is on the list, the angel tells him it isn't. Instead of being disheartened, Abou Ben Adhem responds by asking the angel to write him down as someone who loves his fellow human beings. In the end, when the angel returns, Abou Ben Adhem's name is at the top of the list, signifying that his love and kindness towards others are the most precious qualities in the eyes of God.

Overall, the poem conveys the message the saving creation is the same as serving the creator, a very sikh message.  I am reminded of the Satgur ki seva saphal hai, a shabad which ends with the same message: I love the ones who love my lord.

Abou Ben Adhem - A Poem About Loving

Abou Ben Adhem
By Leigh Hunt

Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight in his room,
Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold:—
Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the presence in the room he said,
"What writest thou?"—The vision raised its head,
And with a look made of all sweet accord,
Answered, "The names of those who love the Lord."
"And is mine one?" said Abou. "Nay, not so,"
Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low,
But cheerly still; and said, "I pray thee, then,
Write me as one that loves his fellow men."

The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night
It came again with a great wakening light,
And showed the names whom love of God had blest,
And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest.

My Thoughts

What does God's angel write
in a book made of gold?
The names of those
who love the
lord

And on the top he writes
the names of those
who love his
creation

Reminds me of: Satgur Ki Seva Saphal Hai

More on Ibrahim ibn Adham from Wiki

Ibrahim ibn Adham, also known as Ibrahim Balkhi (إبراهيم بن أدهم), lived approximately from 718 to 782 CE (c. 100 to 165 AH) and stands out as one of the foremost early ascetic Sufi saints.

His conversion story is a celebrated tale within Sufi lore. It mirrors the legendary journey of a prince who relinquished his throne to embrace asceticism, bearing a striking resemblance to the narrative of Gautama Buddha. In Sufi tradition, Ibrahim is credited with numerous virtuous deeds, and his modest way of life sharply contrasted with his earlier role as the king of Balkh, which was once a prominent center of Buddhism. As recounted by Abu Nu'aym, Ibrahim stressed the significance of serenity and contemplation in the practice of asceticism. Rumi extensively detailed Ibrahim's legend in his Masnavi. Among Ibrahim's notable disciples, Shaqiq al-Balkhi (d. 810) stands out as the most famous.

Life of Ibrahim ibn Adham

In accordance with Indian-Sufi Muslim traditions, Ibrahim hailed from Kufa, with his birthplace being Balkh, situated in modern-day Afghanistan. Although some historians have traced his lineage back to 'Abdullah, the brother of Ja'far al-Sadiq, the son of Muhammad al-Baqir, and the grandson of Husayn ibn Ali, the prevailing family tree of his Sufi ancestors, as recognized by most scholars, connects him to Umar bin Khattab.

Accounts of Ibrahim's life have been chronicled by medieval writers such as Ibn Asakir and Bukhari.

Born into the Arab community of Balkh around 730 CE, Ibrahim initially occupied the throne as the local king. Remarkably wealthy, it is even reported that he had 16 thousand wives and 1.8 million horses. However, he received divine warnings, conveyed through Khidr, who appeared to him twice. As a result, Ibrahim relinquished his royal position to embark on a life of asceticism in Syria. Around 750 CE, he undertook a migration and adopted a semi-nomadic existence, often journeying as far south as Gaza. Rejecting the practice of begging, Ibrahim tirelessly toiled for his sustenance, engaging in tasks like grinding corn and tending orchards. Additionally, historical accounts suggest that he participated in military activities along the Byzantine border, with his untimely demise purportedly occurring during one of his naval expeditions.

His initial spiritual mentor was a Christian monk named Simeon, with whom he engaged in a profound dialogue recounted in his writings:[dubious – discuss]

"I visited him in his cell and asked, 'Father Simeon, how long have you been here?' He replied, 'For seventy years.' Curiously, I inquired about his food, to which he responded, 'O Hanifite, what prompts this question?' I explained, 'I am curious to know.' He then revealed, 'Every night, I consume one chickpea.' Perplexed, I asked, 'How does one chickpea sustain you?' He replied, 'Once a year, they come to me, adorn my cell, and show me great reverence. Whenever my spirit wanes in worship, I recall that moment and endure a year's labor for an hour's glory. Therefore, O Hanifite, endure a year's toil for the sake of eternity.'"

According to the historical records of the Chishti Order of Sufis, he holds a revered place among their early masters and received instruction from Fudhail Bin Iyadh for a period.

Typical of the resting places of saints, numerous locations have been suggested as the burial site of Ibrahim ibn Adham. Ibn Asakir asserted that Ibrahim was interred on a Byzantine island, while alternative sources propose his tomb to be in Tyre, Baghdad, the "city of the prophet Lot," the "cave of Jeremiah" in Jerusalem, and, finally, in the city of Jablah on the Syrian coast.

Historicity and literary reception

The medieval accounts recounting Ibrahim's life are a blend of history and legend. Ibrahim likely existed as a historical Sufi figure in the 8th century, and over time, his narrative was embellished in subsequent retellings. Notably, the Persian Memorial of the Saints, authored by Attar, serves as one of the most comprehensive sources regarding Ibrahim's conversion and early years as the king of Balkh. It was through these Persian accounts that the story of Ibrahim entered the legendary literature of India and Indonesia, where additional embellishments without historical basis were incorporated.

One noteworthy aspect of the non-Arabic literature on Ibrahim is the emergence of full-length biographies that delve into his life, rather than merely focusing on key episodes. Furthermore, many of these non-Arabic narratives begin with a brief account of Ibrahim's father, Adham. Among these biographies, Rumi's Persian work stands out as one of the most renowned, and it was subsequently adapted into Arabic form by unknown sources. Additionally, biographical accounts in languages like Urdu and Malay laid the groundwork for shorter biographies in Javanese and Sundanese.

It's worth noting that English poet Leigh Hunt's poem "Abou Ben Adhem" tells a tale inspired by the life of Ibrahim ibn Adham. In a similar vein, the musical Flahooley features a character named Abou Ben Atom, portrayed by Irwin Corey in the original 1951 Broadway production.
What was said to the rose
- Rumi

What was said to the rose that made it open
was said to me here in my chest.

What was told the Cypress that made it strong and straight,
what was whispered the jasmine so it is what it is,
whatever made sugarcane sweet,
whatever was said to the inhabitants of the town of Chigil in Turkestan that makes them so handsome,
whatever lets the pomegranate flower blush like a human face,
that is being said to me now.
I blush.

Whatever put eloquence in
language, that's happening here.
The great warehouse doors open; I fill with gratitude,
chewing a piece of sugarcane,
in love with the one to whom every that belongs!

RUMI

Bulleh Shah the celebrated sufi poet of Punjab asks the question:
Bulla Ki Jaana Main Kaun
O Bulla! Who knows who I am?
Bulleh Shah is trying to say that he is more than what he seems - his true essence is his soul.  It is interesting the way he answers the question is by telling us what he is not.  For instance he starts with "I am not a believer, I am not the pagan." Bulleh Shah is implying that he is just not the believer or the pagan, he is something bigger.  He is beyond labels and distinctions.  It is a sufi's way of Adi Shankara saying Neti Neti.

In his poem To You Walt Whitman does to "you" what Bulleh Shah is doing to "I" in this song.
Whoever you are, I fear you are walking the walks of dreams,
I fear these supposed realities are to melt from under your feet and hands
Even now your features, joys, speech, house, trade, manners, troubles, follies, costume, crimes, dissipate away from you,
Your true soul and body appear before me,

There is some uncertainty as to who this person is, which is why Whitman says, "Whoever you are." He is not interested in the person with certain features, joys and speech. Similarly to Bulleh Shah, Whitman is interested in the true soul of this person.

There are two alternative deeper meanings to the opening line.  The first meaning uses the first person singular meaning - "Who knows who I am".  But the way this is written, it can also mean second person or third singular (if you put the comma after Main): Bullah, what do I know who "you" are? It could also mean, "Bullah, what do I know who "he" is?  By having a line that can mean any of the three persons, the differences between, you, I and he are blurred. Just like by repeating "you" Kabir loses his "I" in Tu Tu Karta Tu Hua.

This poem also reminds me of I Am Not I by Juan Ramon Jimenez. He implies "I am not I." I am the "one who will remain standing when I die." Again a pointer to the soul!
