Ja Tu Mere Val Hai

Surrender of the Singer of Oneness

The shabad "Ja Tu Mere Val Hai" conveys a powerful message centered around the concept of surrendering oneself to oneness and the transformation that ensues. While it is impossible to explain this transformation, I will try to write my feelings from the point of view of a singer of oneness.

It is somewhat miraculous that the singer of oneness finds complete reliance and trust in the divine power.  Surrendering to oneness in essence is realizing the interconnection with the universe and aligning our faith with this elusive highest authority that has no parallel or end. This surrender becomes the foundation for the subsequent experiences of peace and contentment.

With oneness on their side, the singer of oneness transcends worries and concerns. The sense of security and assurance derived from their connection with the divine shields them from the anxieties that often plague ordinary life. By entrusting their cares to oneness, they find solace in the knowledge that their well-being is safeguarded.

The act of serving all constituents of oneness brings forth abundant blessings and benefits for the singer. The wealth they receive is boundless, surpassing material possessions and encompassing the richness of spiritual enlightenment. By dedicating themselves to the cause of oneness, the singer taps into the limitless grace that flows from the divine source.

The singer of oneness experiences a profound transformation in their relationships. Enemies are no longer adversaries but become friends as harmony and goodwill permeate their interactions. This shift signifies the all-encompassing love and compassion inherent in oneness, fostering unity and understanding among all beings.

The connection between the singer of oneness and their Guru Govinda represents a deep spiritual bond. Through this relationship, the singer finds peace, bliss, and profound fulfillment. The union with the divine guru becomes a source of guidance, enlightenment, and ultimately, the realization of the self's true purpose.

Surrendering oneself to oneness leads to a profound sense of contentment and resolution. The singer's affairs find resolution, and inner conflicts dissolve in the light of divine acceptance. By aligning their will with the divine plan, the singer of oneness experiences a harmonious flow of life, unburdened by the complexities that hinder personal growth and fulfillment.

For me this shabad encapsulates the transformative power of surrendering oneself to oneness. Through the act of singing and embracing oneness, I have felt profound reliance and trust in the highest power. By singing and embracing oneness, I have experienced a profound sense of reliance, trust, and interconnectedness with the divine. Singing this surrender to oneness with love, and I know it can lead to freedom from worries and concerns, a feeling of abundant blessings, and a harmonious existence.  I believe surrender has transformative effects on anyone that sings and meditates upon this shabad.

Ja Tu Mere Val Hai - The Form of Pauris

The form of this shabad is a "Pauri", a Punjabi term used to describe a ladder, step, staircase. Pauris are a poetic form characterized by their concise structure, typically comprising 6 to 8 lines. Within a Pauri, two or more lines are skillfully crafted to end with rhyming words, adding a harmonious and melodic quality to the composition. Guru Nanak's Japji Sahib has 38 Pauris or step, each progressing the singer of the hymns to the highest ideal. Metaphors of stairways are also found in Hindu, Buddhist and American works.

Ja Tu Mere Val Hai  - Meaning/Translation

If you are on my side
what worry do I have?

You give me everything
If I serve you

My wealth is endless
however much I spend and consume

8.4 million species
are all helping me

All enemies have become friends,
no one wishes me ill.

No one calls me to account,
if Hari absolves me

I have found peace and bliss
meeting Guru Govinda

All my affairs have been resolved,
since you are pleased with me.

If you are on my side
what worry do I have?

You have given me everything
If I am Your slave.

I have been singing this shabad for over 30 years; I composed it when I was a teenager. It comes from a fairly long poem of 55 couplets, lyrics and translation of which is included below. Each couplet is a gem and can be mediated upon separately. I have chosen to sing different portions of the poem in different years. This year I focus on something that is relevant to the ongoing pandemic. The shabad was written by Bhai Nandlal, the poet laureate of Guru Gobind Singh's court.

Bhai Nand Lal, Guru Gobind Singh and I

Bhai Nandlal came from a Hindu family but he was such an expert of farsi and arabic that he was hired by Aurangzeb to teach persian to his kids. The story goes that once after hearing Bhai Nand Lal's interpretation of a Quran verse, Aurangzeb was very impressed. He insisted to his ministers and son that such a man should convert to Islam. Aurangzeb's son was a confidante of Bhai Nandlal and told him that his dad wanted him converted to Islam. Bhai Nand Lal did not want to convert to Islam, so he started pondering as to where he could go to get saved. Someone told him if he wanted to get saved from Aurrangzeb one of the only safe place in North India was Anandpur Sahib, in the court of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

Bhai Nandlal fled overnight towards Anandpur Sahib. The rest is history; he met the guru, served the sangat of Anandpur Sahib and eventually became the poet laureate of Guru Gobind's court. He was the Guru's most favorite poet among the 52 poets he had in his court. He stayed with the Guru for several years.

After Guru Gobind's passing, Bhai Nandlal moved to Multan when he and his descendents lived for over 9 generations. I am fortunate to be his 10th descendant. My father was born in Multan in the ancestral home of the great poet. Our family moved to India after the partition (1947) and we moved to the US in 1991.

Had Guru Gobind Singh not protected Bhai Nandlal from the Mughals, our family would literally not exist. So my existence is a grace of Guru Gobind Singh. My life, literally, is Gur Prasad.

Marham-e-Har Ranj Guru Gobind Singh - 01/08/2022

NOTE: To see lyrics and translation on the video, turn CC on (Captions on).

For this year's recording of the shabad, I focused on one verse that I have never sung, and I found very apt for the times we are living in:

Khaazan-e-har Ganj Guru Gobind Singh
Marham-e-har Ranj Guru Gobind Singh

The keeper of every treasure, Guru Gobind Singh
The treatment of every pain, Guru Gobind Singh

Khaazan means treasurer, khazaanchi. Ganj is a treasure.  For instance Bhagat Farid is called Ganj-e-shakar - the treasure of sweetness. Marham means ointment/cure and Ranj means ailment.  So the guru is the keeper of all treasures and the cure for all ailments.

I am always amazed at all these lines. Each line is a treasure by itself and Bhai Nandlal says so much in so few words, the economy is comparable to the best succint poetry i have ever found: Emily Dickinson and Guru Nanak (especially in describing Lahore Shehar).

Guru Gobind Singh - 12/24/2017

Happy Gurpurab everyone!!!  Today we remember the emperor of emperors, Guru Gobind Singh.  Last week, I sang the first few lines and the last few lines of Guru Gobind Singh's poet laureate Bhai Nandlal. Here is a video of the practice we did at home. Accompanying me on the guitar is my dear friend Janapriyan Levine (http://www.janapriyan.com). Enjoy and share it with your hearts, friends and family ...

I have been singing this poem for many years but this year I focused on the last few lines of the poem.  While most of the poem describes the amazing nature of Guru Gobind Singh, it is the last few lines which give us a glimpse into what gursikhi was during the guru's time.  These last few lines are rarely sung - they describe the utmost humility of Bhai Nandlal. If I were to prosify his beautiful poetic lines, the gist is:
My soul is branded "Guru Gobind Singh;" I am the slave dog of Guru Gobind Singh ... nay, I am lower than his dogs; if I were to partake the leftovers of his dogs, I would be fortunate. The only hope I have now is that when my life is sacrificed for the Guru, let my head be on his feet.

Because the beginning of spring is about love, I recorded this shabad that I used to love to hear -- Jagjit Singh wrote the melody and recorded this about 15 years ago; I have made several changes to it but the backbone melody is the same. This is Guru Arjan Dev's shabad (technically a chhant - a 6 line poem) written in Raag Bihaagra, but Jagjit Singh composed it in a different but similar raag.

As always, the translation on the video is just one set of thoughts from this week - each shabad has multiple deep meanings that are only understood when meditating upon it. So I highly encourage that!

Here are the lyrics in Punjabi, Hindi and English and another translation:

I have done several recordings of Jo Mange Thakur Apne Te over the years. This recording was done live in December 2019 with Ustad Ahsan Ali on the Sarangi.  This was released last month as part of the Kirpa Dhaar project to release uplifting shabads during the pandemic. Sarangi and Voice were recorded in the studio in December; piano was later added in California.  Like most of my productions, it took many months to mix. Much thanks also to Gaurav Dhingra and Aman Kakkar for their contributions on this project.

The key message of Jo Mange is to remove our vices: Avgun Sab Mete.  This is what the singer asks for. O oneness, come and hug me and remove my vices.

Lyrics in English

Jo mange thakur apne te
Soi soi devai
Nanak das mukh te jo bole
Eehaa oohaa sach hovai

Chatur disa kino bal apna,
Sir upar kar dhareyo
Kirpa katakh avalokan kino,
Das ka dukh bidaryo

Har jan rakhe gur govind
Raakhe gur govind
Kanth lae avguna sab mete,
Dyaal purakh bakshand

Translation in English by Sant Singh Khalsa

Whatever I ask for from my Lord and Master, he gives that to me.
Whatever the Lord's slave Nanak utters with his mouth, proves to be true, here and hereafter.

He has extended His power in all four directions, and placed His hand upon my head.
Gazing upon me with his Eye of Mercy, He has dispelled the pains of His slave. ||1||

The Guru, the Lord of the Universe, has saved the Lord's humble servant.
Hugging me close in His embrace, the merciful, forgiving Lord has erased all my sins. ||Pause||

Alternative Translation by Shivpreet Singh

The one whose power
extends in all four directions,
places His hand
upon my head.

He gazes upon me
with His vision of mercy
and dispels within me
all of my pain.

That merciful, forgiving master
erases all my vices.
He embraces me.
He takes care of me.

I obtain, says slave Nanak,
Whatever I ask of my Master.
And Whatever I say
proves true, here and hereafter.

Who is Govind?

In the rahao line Guru Arjan says, "Har Jan Rakhe Guru Govind." I prefer not translating the "names" of "God" because of potential misinterpretations.  Guru Nanak's Mool Mantra is the best place to explore the meaning of Ekomkaar.  Additionally, from the context of this shabad it is clear that Guru Arjan sings of the Govind whose power spreads in all four directions. He feels like Govind's hand is on his head.  More: https://shivpreetsingh.blogspot.com/2020/08/jo-mange-sarangi-version.html

Jo Mange Thakur Apne - Spanish Translation by Iris Salinas Ibacache

El uno cuyo poder
se extiende en las cuatro direcciones,
pone su mano
sobre mi cabeza .

Su mirada sobre mí
con su visión de la misericordia
y disipa dentro de mí
todo mi dolor .

Eso misericordioso , que perdona maestro
borra todos mis vicios .
Él me abraza .
Él cuida de mí .

Obtengo , dice Nanak esclavo ,

Composed in Raag Maajh, "I am bathed in you" ... an area inside the rivers

Inspired by listening to Pandit Maniram and Pandit Jasraj.  Someone sent me the video below this morning. I loved the mix of vilambit and normal/addition of dhrupad gayiki to bhajan gayaki. I have been trying to add dhrupad elements to kirtan singing; and it seems like I was not the only one who came up with the idea. It was being done by Pandit Maniram a century ago.

Randomly generated Shloka from Guru Nanak from Page 144-145; shabad implies whatever is being done it is because of you. And exposition of Kartapurakh.

(GGS 144-145)

Translation:
Majh Guru Nanak
If you please one praises and sings
If you please one bathes in holy waters
If you please one rubs ashes on their body
If you please one  blows the sacred conch
If you please one reads the Quran and Bible
If you please one becomes a priest
If you please one becomes a king
If you please one enjoys the flavors of royalty
If you please ones' sword removes heads from bodies
If you please one roams the world and hears stories
If you please Name is constructed
If you please you are pleasing
Nanak says everything else is false

Using successive lines as antaras, like so:

Interesting Note on Guru Nanak

The following is an interesting line, and it comes towards the end. Perhaps Guru nanak is talking about himself:

If you please one roams the world and hear stories

Pandit Maniram Video:
I wish the interviewer had let Pandit Maniram continue his Ragini lecture. That was going so well. But whatever is preserved is still wonderful:

Inspiration: I was listening to some Carnatic music and found a raag that is similar to Raag Asa (Aarbhi). And I was reminded of how during the times of Guru Nanak, Raag Shriraag (Sri/Shri/Shree/Sree) was sung in two thaats: purvi and kafi. The purvi thaat is the only one that remains now in current Sikh music, but I have heard one composition from Bhai Avtar Singh in the kafi thaat.  This raag is very similar to the one that is used in Carnatic music (see below).  I have composed a few shabads in this rare kind of Shriraag.

I learned a couple of new things today. In Carnatic music, the Shriraag in Kafi thaat is called "Raag Shriragam". so like Gurbani, the word "raag" is in the raag's name, so it is Raag Sriraag, not Raag Shri); see below for the reference. I also listened to the fifth Pancharatna Kriti Endaro mahanubhavulu composed by Tyagaraja in Telugu (listed in Wikipedia, copied below).  Inspired by that I composed this shabad:

Composition 20129
Refrain Used: Nanak Saachai Ko Sach Jaan
Raag: Shriraag (Kafi Thaat)
8 beat cycle

Truth, Newspaper, News, Printed, Text, Message, Page

The Shabad is about how to stay away from false intoxications of the world, and understand the truth. Raag Shri is often used to remind us of real wealth, lasting reality, and true self.

English Translation:

The Giver has given man intoxicating pill of falsehood.
Having been intoxicated therewith he has forgotten death and makes merry for four days.
The mortals, who are the nonusers of intoxicants, obtain truthfulness to keep them in God's Court.

O Nanak! know the True Lord alone as True.
By serving whom the mortal attains peace and goes to Thine Court with honour O Lord! Pause.

The wine of truth is prepared without molasses and in that there is the True Name.
I am a sacrifice unto all those who hear and repeat (the True Name).
Only then the man is deemed to be intoxicated when he obtains room in God's mansion.

Take bath in the water of virtues and apply the perfume of sandal of righteousness to the body,
then shall thy face become bright. This is the gift of a hundred thousand gifts.
Tell thine woes to Him, with whom rest all the weals.

Why should we in our mind grow oblivious of Him who is the owner of our soul and life.
Without Him all vestures and viand are impure.
All other things are false. What pleases Thee, (O Lord!) becomes acceptable.

More on the Kafi Thaat Raag Shri (Carnatic):

Janyam of 22nd mela Karaharapriya. Alias: shriragam, shreeragam, shri, shree
https://www.ragasurabhi.com/carnatic-music/raga/raga--shri-ragam.html

More from Wikipedia:

Shri ragam is an ancient ragam in the Carnatic tradition. It is also written as Sri or Shree.[1] This scale does not have all the seven swaras (musical notes) in the ascending scale.[1] Shree is the asampurna melakartha equivalent of Kharaharapriya, the 22nd Melakarta rāgam.[1][2] It is the last of the 5 Ghana rāgams of Carnatic music.[1] It is a popular rāgam that is considered to be highly auspicious.[2]

Notably, Carnatic Shree takes the lower madhyamam being the asampurna scale equivalent of Kharaharapriya. It is not related to the Hindustani raga, Shree.

Structure and Lakshana

Ascending scale is same as Madhyamavati scale, shown here with shadjam at C

Notes in descending scale is that of Kharaharapriya scale, shown here with shadjam at C

Shree is an asymmetric rāgam that does not contain gāndhāram or dhaivatam in the ascending scale. It is a audava-vakra-sampurna rāgam (or owdava, meaning pentatonic in ascending scale),[1] where vakra indicates the zig-zag nature of jumping notes in descending scale.

Ḏāsī suṯ jan biḏar suḏāmā ugarsain ka▫o rāj ḏī▫e.

You saved Bidur, the son of the slave-girl, and Sudama; You restored Ugrasain to his throne.

Jap hīn ṯap hīn kul hīn karam hīn nāme ke su▫āmī ṯe▫ū ṯare. ||2||1||

Without meditation, without penance, without a good family, without good deeds, Naam Dayv's Lord and Master saved them all. ||2||1||

Translation of Har Bin Jeo Jal Bal Jao

Raag Siree Raag, First Mehl, First House:

If I had a palace made of pearls, inlaid with jewels,
scented with musk, saffron and sandalwood, a sheer delight to behold -
seeing this, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||1||

Without the Lord, my soul is scorched and burnt.
I consulted my Guru, and now I see that there is no other place at all. ||1||Pause||

If the floor of this palace was a mosaic of diamonds and rubies, and if my bed was encased with rubies,
and if heavenly beauties, their faces adorned with emeralds, tried to entice me with sensual gestures of love -
seeing these, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||2||

If I were to become a Siddha, and work miracles, summon wealth
and become invisible and visible at will, so that people would hold me in awe -
seeing these, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||3||

If I were to become an emperor and raise a huge army, and sit on a throne,
issuing commands and collecting taxes-O Nanak, all of this could pass away like a puff of wind.
Seeing these, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||4||1||
