I’ve been working on a musical composition for a beautiful shabad by Bhagat Naamdev, and it’s been making me think deeply about its message. The shabad, “Beethal Bhaila” in Raag Aasaa, has this incredible energy that is both playful and profoundly insightful.

Naamdev starts by listing the items of a traditional ritual offering: water for a sacred bath, flowers for a garland, milk to make a sweet pudding (kheer). But then he gently turns it all on its head. He asks: if the water is already teeming with millions of lifeforms, if a bee has already stolen the flower’s fragrance, and if a calf has already tasted the milk, then what can I possibly offer that is truly “pure” or untouched?

The answer he gives in the refrain (the rahāo) is breathtaking: “Wherever I go, my playful Beethal is already there, immersed in endless bliss.”

This is the radical, beautiful heart of the poem. When you realize the Divine is everywhere—pervading every “here and there,” as he says—then worship stops being about presenting physical things and starts being about seeing. The real offering becomes awareness (Naam itself)—the ability to recognize that Presence in every corner of existence, in every space and interspace. The ritual isn't destroyed; it’s fulfilled. The entire world becomes the garland, the bath, the food.

This vision connects deeply with our entire tradition. I hear echoes of it in Guru Nanak’s “You are everywhere I go,” in Kabir’s “Wherever I look, there You are,” and in Guru Arjan’s “Wherever I look, There You are present.” They are all singing the same truth. It is also reminding me of the shabads of offering by Guru Nanak and Kabir - what can we offer you God, when you give us everything.

This is what I’m trying to capture in my composition and the reflective poem below. The shabad is an invitation to bring less stuff and more sight. It’s a call to meet that playful, dear Presence (Beethal) who is already here—in the hum of the bee, the nuzzle of the calf, the flow of the river, and in our very breath—and to finally join in that “mahā anand,” that great, unending play.

I hope the music can carry even a fraction of that joy and revelation.

The Offering
- After Bhagat Namdev

Tell me, what do you plan to offer?
A dipper of clear water? Look closer:
already a small cosmos of beings
is dancing in each sun-warmed drop.

The flower you would thread on a string?
Its quiet secret has gone ahead,
riding a bee’s unhurried leg
to a low, humming room of gold.

And the milk for kheer?
The calf’s wet muzzle has already blessed it.
Everywhere you turn for an offering
there is only that which has been used already.

What else remains to offer but how you see?

I have started a new translation of this poem by Guru Nanak about dancing.

The original translation and poem is below.

With intellect as my guitar, and love as my drum;
the music resounding bliss in my heart
with this very devotion, and this very penance,
I dance in this color step after step ||1||

Know that the perfect beat is the singing of eternity;
the dance that fills the mind with pleasure. ||1||Pause||

Beating cymbals of truth and contentment
my ankle bells chime my lasting love.
Many melodies become one vibration,
duality eliminated step after step ||2|

Fear spins around my heart and mind,
whether sitting or standing.
when I finally lie down it will just be ashes
I dance in this color step after step ||3||

I go as a beggar in the company of the inspired
With their spirit may I be inspired myself
O Nanak, chant over and over again
the dance of angels step after step ||4||6||

After a long time, I am working on a beautiful poem by my dear Guru Nanak. It is called "Baras Ghana Meraa Man Bheena," which means, "O clouds rain hard so my mind is drenched." I have decided to sing this in public for the first time at a kirtan next month. In tune with the season, this is in Raag Malhar, and the poem is about the mind of a soul bride drenched with her love. It is sounding awesome already and I can't wait to finish composing, doing kirtan and recording. It will likely take about a month ...

Here is a rough translation of this poem:

I beg you my dear angel, unite me with my love. I hear the thunder in the clouds, and my mind is cooled and soothed; imbued with my beloved, I sing his praises. ||1||

Refrain:
The rain pours down; my mind is drenched with love.
Drops of ambrosial nectar please my heart;
loving the angel, I relish his essense ||1||Pause||

At intuitive peace and poise, that one is loved by her love who listens to the angel's message. Her love never departs, her mind and body are filled with joy. ||2||

She has detached herself from negativities; the universe is her love, her marriage eternal.
She has no separation nor sorrow; the universe showers her with Grace. ||3||

There is no coming or going; her mind be steady and stable.
The one who sings, that soul-bride is true, she is right. ||4||2||

I'm working on Meera's bai's song Barsai Badariya and that inspired me to write this poem today. Even the warlike rain to Meera is a remembrance of her love.

In the battle of the skies
the clouds swarm in
from all four directions
thunder follows lightening

Peace is found on the run
and darkness on the sprawl
But When cannons are fired
rose petals gently fall

Then surrender of true beauty
lets a pleasant wind blow
incensing everything
that comes in its flow

Meera unites with Krishna
with each note of Malhar
so bring it on again,
O rain Gods, your war
