Tu Sun Harna Kaleya

Lyrics and Traditional Translations

ikOankaar satigur prasaadh ||
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

aasaa mahalaa pehilaa chha(n)t ghar teejaa ||
Aasaa, First Mehla, Chhant, Third House:

too(n) sun haranaa kaaliaa kee vaaReeaai raataa raam ||
Listen, O black deer: why are you so attached to the orchard of passion?

bikh fal meeThaa chaar dhin fir hovai taataa raam ||
The fruit of sin is sweet for only a few days, and then it grows hot and bitter.

fir hoi taataa kharaa maataa naam bin parataape ||
That fruit which intoxicated you has now become bitter and painful, without the Naam.

oh jev sair dhei laharee bijul jivai chamake ||
It is temporary, like the waves on the sea, and the flash of lightning.

har baajh raakhaa koi naahee soi tujheh bisaariaa ||
Without the Lord, there is no other protector, but you have forgotten Him.

sach kahai naanak chet re man mareh haranaa kaaliaa ||1||
Nanak speaks the Truth. Reflect upon it, O mind; you shall die, O black deer. ||1||

Professor Sahib Singh's interpretation:

O black deer! (O mind that saunters carelessly through the world like a black deer!) You listen (to me)! Why are you enjoying yourself in this (world) flower garden? The fruit (of this fulwadi) is poison, (ie, it produces spiritual death) It looks delicious for a few days, then it becomes painful.

In which you are so engrossed, it eventually becomes painful. Without the name of God, it gives a lot of pain. (Even if it is short-lived) like the waves of the sea or like lightning.

There is no (ever-present) guardian except (the name of) God (O mind that pecks like a deer!) Him you have forgotten. Nanak says - O black deer! O mind! Meditate on the Everlasting God, otherwise (by being engrossed in this world) you will suffer your own spiritual death.

My Translation:

Deer Mind

Listen, black deer: why are you
so infatuated with the garden?
Poison fruit is sweet
for only four days,
then it becomes unbearable.

Intoxicated and devoid of essence,
you suffer. Like ocean waves,
like flashes of lightening.

Apart from Hari, there is
no other savior.
I tell you the truth,
remember, O mind:
You will die, O black deer!

The public weekly meditation happens every week on Saturday (9am PST/10:30pm IST) where we can go wherever we want - listening, reciting, conversing, singing ... the sky is the limit!

Guru Nanak sings in Raag Asa to a black deer, enjoying fruit in a garden. "Tu Sun," he says—listen, the fruits you are enamored with will only last four days. The Guru is metaphorically addressing our mind, comparing it to the black deer wandering through the world garden, the forest of thoughts, oblivious to the inner fragrance it carries.

I think I composed this shabad in 2017. The first recordings for creating this arrangement were done in Delhi in 2019, and the last few recordings were done in 2024.  I am thankful to Ahsan Ali for his Sarangi, Rajesh Prasanna for his bansuri, Shamik Guha Roy for his percussion/rhythm tracks, and especially Jashan Jot Kaur and Pragya Singh for their background vocals. Both Jashan Jot and Pragya traveled from Punjab and Rajasthan to just meet me when I was on a trip to India; when they visited me I was recording this and I thought it would be a good idea to have a "Tu Sun" chorus in the background - and that is how, that came about.

The shabad is about listening.  We will be doing meditations on this in May and June of 2024. If you want to participate in these meditations, join me on the live YouTube sessions every Saturday at 9am PST/9:30pm IST.

Aasaa, Guru Nanak

In that pool, people have made their homes, but the water there is as hot as fire!
In the swamp of emotional attachment, their feet cannot move. I have seen them drowning there. ||1||

In your mind, you do not remember the One Lord-you fool!
You have forgotten the Lord; your virtues shall wither away. ||1||Pause||

I am not celibate, nor truthful, nor scholarly. I was born foolish and ignorant into this world.
Prays Nanak, I seek the Sanctuary of those who have not forgotten You, O Lord! ||2||3||

Two Meanings in Fareedkoti Translation

Sep 9, 2018

Notice the Fareed Koti translation gives two alternative meanings for the first line. It is possible that the first stanza can be sung at the end of the shabad with the affect of the alternative meaning:

In that pool of the world, the people have their homes; there, the Lord has created water and fire.

In the mud of earthly attachment, their feet have become mired, and I have seen them drowning there. ||1||

O foolish people, why don't you remember the One Lord?

Forgetting the Lord, your virtues shall wither away. ||1||Pause||

I am not a celibate, nor am I truthful, nor a scholar; I was born foolish and ignorant.

Prays Nanak, I seek the Sanctuary of those who do not forget You, Lord. ||2||29||

Mere Ridai Tu Aao on Baisakhi

Today on Baisakhi the sunset makes everything saffron and it inspires the hope of guru darshan ... so the seeker takes a long journey to meet at the guru at harimandir and asks the guru for this gift: Let me slow down from the hustle bustle of life to remember and sing hari's name until my mind is fashioned by hari's shabad.  Give me this wisdom that is exalted, this mati that has been made uttam like the sunset has made everything saffron. And the true guru leads the seeker gently to a deep journey within.

Video with my translation follows. Lyrics and alternative translations are below along with additional Gurbani that I meditated upon on hearing this shabad.

My Translation

O exalted wisdom
come into my heart
let me sing and ponder
the virtues of Govinda
and let me be enthralled
in the true essence

With the Guru's word
let me fashion my mind.
Envisioning the Guru
let me collect Hari's wealth.

Let me be sated
only by the truth
Instead of 68 holy pilgrimages
let me choose the dust of saints' feet

Let me recognize
the one doer in everyone
Engaging with the saints
let my wisdom blossom

Let me serve everyone
giving up my pride
To me, O guru,
give this blessing

English Lyrics and Translation - Bhai Manmohan Singh

Āsā mėhlā 5.
Asa 5th Guru.

Gur kai sabaḏ banāvahu ih man.
In the mould of Guru's instruction, I fashion this mind of mine.

Gur kā ḏarsan sancẖahu har ḏẖan. ||1||
I see Guru's sight and amass God's wealth.

Ūṯam maṯ merai riḏai ṯūʼn āo.
O sublime understanding come thou into my mind.

Ḏẖiāvao gāvao guṇ govinḏā aṯ parīṯam mohi lāgai nāo. ||1|| rahāo.
That I may ponder on and sing Lord's praise and exceedingly love His Name. Pause.

Ŧaripaṯ agẖāvan sācẖai nāe.
Through the True Name I am sated and satiated.

Aṯẖsaṯẖ majan sanṯ ḏẖūrāe. ||2||
The dust of saints feet is my ablution at the sixty eight shrines.

Sabẖ mėh jāno karṯā ek.
I realize that the Creator alone is contained amongst all.

Sāḏẖsangaṯ mil buḏẖ bibek. ||3||
By meeting saints society acute becomes my understanding.

Ḏās sagal kā cẖẖod abẖimān.
Abandoning pride, I have become the servant of all.

Nānak kao gur ḏīno ḏān. ||4||25||
Unto Nanak, the great Lord has granted this boon.

New Composition: 21052
Raag Asa
Guru Arjan

Kavan Bani Ri Teri Laali

Celebrating a colorful Holi with this new shabad by Guru Arjan Dev in Raag Asa. Really a question answer with the soul bride ... How did you become so beautifully crimson, asks the seeker. The answer is shared by Guru Arjan at the end of the shabad. Share with you minds, hearts, souls, friends and family! Happy Holi from California!

[I will likely continue to write on this shabad later this month]

The Music

Unlike other compositions which often take years, this studio recording was completed in a week - from composing the melody, singing the vocals, playing the music, mixing and mastering. I only read this shabad for the first time a week before Holi and I wanted to complete this on time to share for Holi.  I really wanted Rajesh Prasanna to flute the bansuri on this track -- it would go really well with the holi theme. I did what I normally hardly ever do -- to make it easier (and faster) for him, I roughly recording the interludes in a mix of alaaps, sargams and taranas and sent it to Rajesh. While I was waiting for him to send me his flute parts, I finalized the rhythms and the arrangement in a couple of days.  But it was too bad that he felt sick and couldn't finish the recording; so then I just layered my rough interludes with a sampled cello library that I played on the keyboard to finish the interludes.  It is a highly unusual way to do interludes, but I am never afraid of the unusual -- and it sounded heartful. So that is how I left it and that is what you hear in the interludes.  Rajesh sent me a really nice holi greeting with an old picture of ours which I am sharing here; hopefully sometime in the future we will do a bansuri version of this shabad.

Translation by Bhai Manmohan Singh

The red gown looks beautiful on thy body.
When thou became pleasing to the Lord, then, is His heart bewitched.

What has given thee this red bloom?
Whose love has rendered thee tulip-crimsons. Pause.

Thou art beautiful and thou the happy wife.
In thy home is the beloved and in thy home is good fortune.

Thou art chaste and thou the most distinguished.
Thou art pleasing to thy beloved and thou possesseth superior understanding.

I am pleasing to my darling, therefore I have assumed tulip-red dye.
Say Nanak that the Lord has looked on me with a favouring glance.

Translation by Sant Singh Khalsa

That red dress looks so beautiful on your body.
Your Husband Lord is pleased, and His heart is enticed. ||1||

Whose handiwork is this red beauty of yours?
Whose love has rendered the poppy so red? ||1||Pause||

You are so beautiful; you are the happy soul-bride.
Your Beloved is in your home; good fortune is in your home. ||2||

You are pure and chaste, you are most distinguished.
You are pleasing to Your Beloved, and you have sublime understanding. ||3||

I am pleasing to my Beloved, and so I am imbued with the deep red color.
Says Nanak, I have been totally blessed with the Lord's Glance of Grace. ||4||

Meetha Meetha is on Spotify and iTunes as of yesterday. For many of the shabads that were just live practices, I had not added them to the distribution but folks have been asking me to put these shabads so they can have them on their playlists. So I'll try to add them routinely going forward. Thanks for the prodding! Your words appear sweet to me!

Meetha Meetha: Translation and Notes

Shabad: Guru Arjan
Bansuri: Rajesh Prasanna
Raag: Asa
Several years ago I heard this and I keep going back to this haunting melody by Shubha Mudgal. The lyrics are strikingly similar to Kabir's shabad in the Guru Granth Sahib Gao Gao Ri Dulhani on which I have written in a different note. The essence of the words is the same, and each is very beautiful.

Raag Asa or Gauri - depending on the listener

Raag In Gurbani this is sung in Asa, while in Kabir's Granthavali this is in Raag Gauri.  It is Shubha Mudgal doesn't sing it in either raags.  I believe the responsibility of the deciding the raag is sometimes upon the singer, and sometime on the editor.  But they are both acting as listeners. They can hear different colors of oneness in the same song and therefore the decision on different raags.  Bhai Gurdas or Guru Arjan may have found the hope of bliss in this Kabir shabad and added it to Guru Nanak's new raag Asa.  The editor of the Kabir Granthavali instead focused on coloring of the mind, body and soul to the color of oneness (tan rati kari ...), therefore the choice of Raag Gauri.

Lyrics in English and Hindi

Dulhani gavahu mangalchaar
Hum ghar aaye raaja raam bhartaar

Tan rati kari mein man rati kari hoon, panch tatt baraati
ramdev morai paahun aaye, main joban main maati

Sareer sarvar bedi karihoon brahma ved uchaar
Ramdev sang bhaavari lehoon dhan dhan bhaag hamaar

Sur tainteesu kautig aaye munivar sahas athaasi
keh kabir hum byaahi chale hain purush ek avinashi

Translation - Wedding of Kabir

The bride sings songs of joy
Raja Raam has come to her house to be her husbad

I have colored my body and mind, five elements are the wedding guests
Raam has come to wed me, I am young and crazy

My body recites the ocean of brahma's veds
With Raam I circumambulate, what good fortune!

33 angels have come. 88,000 sages too
Kabir says the one indestructible man takes me away
