I am meditating on Guru Arjan's Shabad Rasna Japti Tuhi Tuhi.  It is a shabad about complete surrender to oneness. First the shabad; Lyrics, translation and my thoughts are below.

Rasna Japti Tuhi Tuhi - Raag Sarang

Surrendering to My Source, Sustenance and Sanctuary

This shabad by Guru Arjan is about the undying theme of surrender to oneness. While the Guru doesn't specifically talk about merging into the divine, this is a beautiful submersion.

In this version of the poem, the speaker articulates, "My tongue chants 'You alone' 'You alone.'" This repetition of the phrase "tuhi" or "You alone" emphasizes a singular focus on the divine presence, making it the sole object of veneration. All other distractions and attachments fade away. Only you is left. Just oneness. Only divinity.

The divine as not just the creator, but also its constant sustainer and in the end its final sanctuary. At every moment, and in every place, the singer is replete with this oneness. This oneness is closer than all relationships, even the closest ones, like that of a father, a mother, a sibling and a friend.  The singer longs for a sense of belonging to truth, Satnam, the true home.

This oneness is also the true wealth.  The divine is presented as a repository of treasures, symbolizing spiritual wealth and fulfillment. This ultimately leads to a state of bliss and contentment - "You fulfill all my desires; I am in bliss."

A deep and intimate connection with a divine presence serves as the source, sustainer and sanctuary of life. Oneness becomes the ultimate desire, the consistent bliss.

  • Khudaaya - Guru Nanak
Guru Nanak says in this shabad in Farsi, "I just want this one life-giving thing, not the other poisons of the world." The remembrance of oneness is life giving.  As long as the singer sings, he lives. As soon as he forgets he dies.  This is the only ask of the singer.

  • Tu Sarvar Tu Hans - Guru Nanak
Guru Nanak says, "You are the lake and you are the swan." We are not separate from the universe or from God. We are interconnected with all of creation and the presence of God within this oneness. You are in so many colors.

  • Jalas Tuhi Thalas Tuhi ... Tuhi Tuhi Tuhi Tuhi - Guru Gobind Singh
In Akaal Ustat Guru Gobind Singh starts with elements, you are water, you are earth ... and ends with "Tuhi" 16 times in the end. It is said that, just like Guru Nanak couldn't stop saying Tera tera, Guru Gobind Singh couldn't stop saying Tuhi Tuhi.

  • Khud kuza o khud kuzagar
In his beautiful ghazal "Har lehza ba shakl aan" Shams Mashraqi says You are yourself the clay, the clay flask, potter, and also the wine tippler. You too are the buyer of the flask and the one who breaks it.

  • Gaahe Sufi Gaahe Zaahid - Bhai Nandlal
Somewhere as a mystic, somewhere you appear as a hermit, at other times you appear as an epicure. You have so many colors - mirroring Guru Nanak's sentiment.

  • Iota Subscript - Robert Frost
In "Iota Subscript," Robert Frost's speaker humbly acknowledges their own insignificance, choosing to downplay their ego represented by the letter "I." Instead, they embrace the role of a "subscript" to the omnipresent "you." This transformation signifies a shift from self-importance to a more selfless and humble stance. The poem suggests that by diminishing the emphasis on the self, one can connect more deeply with others and the world around them.

Tasting Grapes and remembering  poem by Rumi -

The grapes of my body can only become wine
After the winemaker tramples me.
I surrender my spirit like grapes to his trampling
So my inmost heart can blaze and dance with joy.
Although the grapes go on weeping blood and sobbing
"I cannot bear any more anguish, any more cruelty"
The trampler stuffs cotton in his ears: "I am not working in ignorance
You can deny me if you want, you have every excuse,
But it is I who am the Master of this Work.
And when through my Passion you reach Perfection,
You will never be done praising my name."

This is a beautiful poem by Rumi.

The chess game of life

What is the difference between
the seeker's experience
of existence and
that of the
rest?

The seeker
knows the spiritual path
to be a subliminal chess game with infinity

The limitless has just
made an amazing move
and the entranced seeker
spurts out in laughter
“I surrender ... I
surrender!”

While the rest of the people
seriously think they
still have a
thousand
moves.

AAKHAN JOR
THE GREAT SURRENDER

Aakhan nah jor, chupai nah jor,
Jor nah ma(n)gan, dhaen nah jor.

I have no power to speak, no power to keep silent.
No power to beg, no power to give.

Jor nah jeevan, maran nah jor,
Jor nah raaj, maal man sor.

I have no power to live, no power to die.
No power to rule, with wealth and mental powers.

Jor nah surathee giaan veechaar,
Jor nah jugathee chhuttai sa(n)saar.

I have no power to gain intuitive understanding, spiritual wisdom and meditation.
No power to find the way to escape from the world.

Jis hathh jor kar vaekhai soe,
Naanak ootham neech nah koe.

He alone has the Power in His Hands, He watches over all.
O Nanak, no one is high or low.

Today I am meditating upon a poem by Robert Bly -

Wanting Sumptuous Heavens - A poem by Robert Bly

No one grumbles among the oyster clans,
And lobsters play their bone guitars all summer.
Only we, with our opposable thumbs, want
Heaven to be, and God to come, again.
There is no end to our grumbling; we want
Comfortable earth and sumptuous Heaven.
But the heron standing on one leg in the bog
Drinks his dark rum all day, and is content.

Are you Grumbling or Singing?

This poem carries a profound message that resonates with Guru Nanak's wisdom of surrendering to the divine will and finding contentment through simplicity. It draws a stark contrast between the human tendency to grumble and yearn for more, symbolized by our opposable thumbs that can create and manipulate, and the creatures of the natural world, who seem content in their simplicity. In Guru Nanak's teachings, the act of singing, or devotional expression, is seen as a way to connect with the divine and find peace in surrendering to the divine will. Bly's portrayal of grumbling as the antithesis of singing underscores the idea that we often choose to complain about our circumstances rather than embracing them.

Bly's poem suggests that, unlike these "lesser" animals, we, as humans, possess the unique ability to ponder the nature of heaven, desire comfort, and seek divine intervention. However, this very capacity can lead to our restlessness and dissatisfaction. The heron in the poem, standing on one leg in the bog and sipping its dark rum, represents the simplicity and contentment that can be found in embracing the present moment and the natural world. In juxtaposing our desires with the heron's contented existence, the poem challenges us to reflect on the wisdom of accepting what is and finding contentment within ourselves, echoing Guru Nanak's message of surrender and devotion as a path to peace and spiritual fulfillment.

The poem also reminds me of what Mirza Ghalib said about Heavens: I know that it is a lie; its just a way to keep the heart happy: Humko Maloom Hai Jannat Ki Haqiqat

You weaved

I am singing Guru Arjan Dev's "Tum Sarnai Aaya" today ...

As I surrendered ...

I savored your essense
my anxiety went
all pains departed
darkness left
seperation ended
all illusion too.
I sing in bliss
in harmony with you

as I surrendered!

Acceptance
by Lena Winfrey Seder
(Author of Metamorphosis of a Muslim)

Here I cry and sit feeling sorry for myself.
Dreams are broken and scattered from my shelf.
Yet, no one stops to lend a helping hand.
Everyone is busy with his life in rat-race land.
Yes, I suppose the victim I play very well.
So used to my role, how can I get out of this hell?
Honestly, my story would put a drama queen to shame.
I suppose there is only myself to blame.
I can only rely on God and myself in the end.
To Destiny’s plan I must follow and bend.
No use to struggle, the fight is over-- stop running!
Accept, give in and stop my silly dreaming.
Nature, world, destiny-- take me for I’m yours!
I’m exhausted from banging my head on walls-- take me
I’m yours forevermore.

This beautiful poem reminds me of my dear Guru Nanak's first poem in Japji. He could have called it Acceptance as well, because thats what its all about:

On the path of purity
I did not become clean
On the path of silence
I did not gain peace
On the path of riches
I did not gain wealth
On the path of intelligence
I did not gain wisdom
On the path of acceptance
I found the noble truth.
- Guru Nanak
Sometimes it takes a scary incident to surrender. This is a story of surrender that Carrie Underwood weaves in her song. Don't let your faith run low ... its the gasoline of life. Believe in the true Guru, the true master. Complete surrender saves. Give your wheel to your Guru. Surrender has to do with letting go of ego. And surrender of ego brings peace. In that way, the service of the true master yields the ultimate reward ... for the singer and for the listener!

She was driving last Friday on her way to Cincinnati
On a snow white Christmas Eve
Going home to see her Mama and her Daddy
With the baby in the backseat

Fifty miles to go and she was running low
On faith and gasoline
It'd been a long hard year

She had a lot on her mind and she didn't pay attention
She was going way too fast
Before she knew it she was spinning
On a thin black sheet of glass

She saw both their lives flash before her eyes
She didn't even have time to cry
She was so scared
She threw her hands up in the air

Jesus, take the wheel
Take it from my hands
?Cause I can't do this on my own

I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on
Jesus, take the wheel

It was still getting colder when she made it to the shoulder
( From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/c/carrie-underwood-lyrics/jesus-take-the-wheel-lyrics.html )
And the car came to a stop
She cried when she saw that baby in the backseat
Sleeping like a rock

And for the first time in a long time
She bowed her head to pray
She said I'm sorry for the way
I've been living my life

I know I've got to change
So from now on tonight

Jesus, take the wheel
Take it from my hands
?Cause I can't do this on my own

I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on

Oh Jesus, take the wheel
Oh, I'm letting go

So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
From this road I'm on
Jesus, take the wheel
Oh, take it, take it from me
Oh, why, ooh

"Hukam rajai" assumes that Ekonkar is sovereign and we do not have much control. So a lot of the things we do to attain peace/freedom/happiness are useless. The only action that makes sense is "Hukam Rajai" -- surrendering to the will to the ruler of our destiny. Surrendering is nothing but loving. And singing is the expression of love! So, the purpose of life remains to sing! This is what my Dear Guru Nanak meant in the 15/16th century in this morning prayer, Japji when he said "Hukam Rajai."

Here are interpretations of Guru Nanak's poem "Hukam Rajai" (Japji 1).
I have started to translate Guru Nanak's Japji Sahib that is a guide to reach the peace promised by the understanding of Ekonkar. Here are the first two steps. The essence, in my opinion, remains that the purpose of life is to sing.

Acceptance

On the path of purity
I did not become clean
On the path of silence
I did not gain peace
On the path of riches
I did not gain wealth
On the path of intelligence
I did not gain wisdom
Walking the path of acceptance
I found the noble truth.

Crossing the clean path
I did not become pure
Striding the silent path
I did not gain peace
Going the gilded path
I did not gain wealth
In the intelligent path
I did not gain wisdom
On the path of love
I found everything.

Do not try to clean
what can't be made pure
Do not try to quiet
what can't be at peace
Do not try to feed
hunger that doesn't die
Do not try to know
what can't be understood
Acede to the power
that rules everyone

Step 1: Gratitude

Cleaning the doesn't clean the mind
cleaning the body a-thousand
Silencing scarcely bring silence
sitting soundless years a-thousand
Hunger happens to still linger
Having heaps hoarded a-thousand
Like candles in the wind are wits
useless rendered a-thousand
Then how to see the light of truth
and remove all this dark falsehood?
By rejoicing in His Will, says Nanak,
and in His will being thankful!

Hukam Rajai - Path of Surrender

On the path of purity
I did not become clean
On the path of silence
I did not gain peace
On the path of riches
I did not gain wealth
On the path of intelligence
I did not gain wisdom
Walking the path of surrender
I found the noble truth.

Step 2: His Will

Its in His Will one and all
No one else does have a say
Through His Will springs all life
And His Will that makes small or great
His Will brings High or low stature
His will is what brings joy and pain
In his will are those in peace
In his will too wandering in vain
Everyone everywhere in His will
Without His will there is no one
And once His will is understood
Says Nanak "I" becomes defunct

Shiv

Cleansing doesn't cleaning
if you clean tier by tier
Silencing doesn't brings silence
if you sit soundless year after year

Hunger will still linger no matter
how many heaps are hoarded here
Like flickers of candles in the wind
the best of wits will disappear

What is then the light of truth
whose brilliance makes the path clear
Living in grace in spite of darkness
and singing His song everywhere
