Kitte nain na joreenis a timeless song of longing, simple on the surface but spiritually profound. It’s a lover’s plea to avoid the agony of separation, yet like much of Reshma’s work, it’s also the soul’s cry for the Divine.
The refrain Kitte nain na joreen (don’t set your eyes on another) speaks to fidelity in both human and divine love. In Sufi tradition, the eyes are gates for attention—to stray is to scatter the heart; to stay fixed on the Beloved is to remain whole.
Tenu wasta Khuda da (for God’s sake) isn’t just an expression—it’s a sacred appeal, the exiled soul begging for reunion. Reshma sang this longing not as an idea but as a lived wound. The world, she suggests, thrives on separating lovers—whether earthly or mystical. The song’s answer? Resist. Guard the connection. Return.
Even the pain—tears flooding, the body weakening—carries devotion. In Sufi poetry, such suffering isn’t defeat but proof of love’s sincerity.
So while Aa Sajna can be heard as a lover’s lament, it’s equally the spirit’s call to God: Burn the walls between us. Keep your gaze steady. For God’s sake, come back. And perhaps its a call to the heart - don't get yourself attached with others, the temporary. Focus on the timeless.
Your absence has gone through me
Like thread through a needle.
Everything I do is stitched with its color
Mittar Pyare Nu
Here is the translation of an old bollywood song, sung by Mukesh. Heard this a lot growing up in Delhi ...
Translation
These moonlit lights don't let me sleep The stories of your love don't let me sleep
During spring when we would meet Heart flowers would bloom from your silky hair Thoughts of the times together don't let me sleep
Hearts can burn with this water O winds please change your direction As the rains of your memories don't let me sleep
I can't sleep
When will you come home?
- Guru Arjan
Like a flower waiting to bloom
Like a lightbulb in a dark room
I'm just sitting here waiting for you
To come home and turn me on
Like the desert waiting for the rain
Like a school kid waiting for the spring
I'm just sitting here waiting for you
To come on home and turn me on
My poor heart, it's been so dark since you been gone
After all, you're the one who turns me off
You're the only one who can turn me back on
My hi-fi's waiting for a new tune
The glass is waiting for some fresh ice cubes
I'm just sitting here waiting for you
To come on home and turn me on
If the dull substance of my flesh were thought, Injurious distance should not stop my way; For then despite of space I would be brought, From limits far remote, where thou dost stay.
No matter then although my foot did stand Upon the farthest earth removed from thee; For nimble thought can jump both sea and land As soon as think the place where he would be.
But, ah, thought kills me that I am not thought, To leap large lengths of miles when thou art gone, But that, so much of earth and water wrought, I must attend time's leisure with my moan, Receiving nought by elements so slow, But heavy tears, badges of either's woe.
****
Beautiful Sonnet, if I paraphrase it means: "If I was made of thought, I would travel long distances fast, and come to you, my Love. However, I am made of slow and heavy elements like earth and water; so in your longing, all I can do is use all the elements I am comprised of and cry"
Couplet based on this:
If I were a feather of thought,
To you I would instantly fly
Alas Of Earth n water I'm wrought,
So just heavy tears I can cry
