The Guru is in all the elements: air, water, earth, space.  But Guru Nanak chose his medium of singing.  And how can with sing? Through words.  But were do these words come from: "praan" or "breath" ... or "pavan."  That is why pavan is the Guru, Pavan Guru. For that reason Guru Arjan says, Saas Saas Simro Gobind. Each breath sings Gobind.

When someone dies, the body remains. It cannot speak anymore. So what has departed? It is this "pavan" that does not stay combined with the body. The "surat" departs.

Kunji Kulaf Praan Kar Karte Baar Na Lai
The creator put both lock and key in breath without delay

Kunji - Key
Kulaf - Lock
Praan - Breath (see below for more detail from Wikipedia)

Both lock and key in our breath.

We have the choice to do good or not.

While in most poems, we are encouraged to open the locked mind. In this shabad, Bhagat Kabir implies its best to lock the mind so the five thieves don't enter. The five thieves are kaam krodh lobh moh ahankar ... lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego.

From Wikipedia on Praan:

In Hindu philosophy including yoga, Indian medicine and Indian martial arts, prana (प्राण, prāṇa; the Sanskrit word for breath, "life force", or "vital principle") permeates reality on all levels including inanimate objects. In Hindu literature, prana is sometimes described as originating from the Sun and connecting the elements.

Five types of prana, collectively known as the five vāyus ("winds"), are described in Hindu texts. Ayurveda, tantra and Tibetan medicine all describe praṇā vāyu as the basic vāyu from which the other vāyus arise.

Pranayama, one of the eight limbs of yoga, is intended to expand prana.

Original Shabad by Bhagat Kabir:

He fashioned the body chamber with six rings, and placed within it the incomparable thing.

He made the breath of life the watchman, with lock and key to protect it; the Creator did this in no time at all. ||1||

Reflection

These are not merely words. These are the words of my master. The words of my love. The words fly without wings because the wind carries them.  They are the songs of the wind. At the same time as these songs pacify deep within, they also reignite candle.

Just like water initiates my life as my father. Just like this earth nourishes my life as my mother. This is the song of the wind that enlightens my life as my Guru.

This song of the wind is my caretaker. One of its verse enlivens my day of life. The other verse cradles my night of life.

This is the song of the wind that provides direction. I can choose to hear this song, and let it penetrate with love. And then I am near love and I am near life. And if I choose to ignore, I am farther from love, and farther from life.

This song of the wind provide me guidance. When I am wrong it blows me towards the light of truth. When I am right, it fills me with joy. Anyone else who can hear this song of the wind, is in similar rapture as me. Pavan Guru.

There are crazy people who think this wind is invisible and these songs cannot be heard. And the crazy people think I am crazy.

On its invisibility Christina Rossetti writes in her poem:

Who Has Seen the Wind
- Christina Rossetti

Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you.
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.

Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I.
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.

The song of the wind

It is quick. The song of the wind travels fast.
It has both powers. It is the lock and the key.  It can destroy or create.
It is inside. It is outside. It is probably in places I can't imagine.
All I thirst for is the song of the wind is all I want.
The master's breath ripens the unripen grapes within.

Love is essential. No matter how much you love them
one can survive without reading, writing and music
one can even live a few days without food and water
but no one survives more than a few minutes
without song of the wind.

Love of the song of the wind is the
most quintessential of the essential loves.

breath is shared. the master
passes on the breath to the disciple
and the disciple then has
the master's breath
along with the equanimity
truth, love and beauty
all of oneness

it is everywhere
where we go

Breath Ripens The Unripe Grapes Within

"Pavan Guru" literally means "Wind Guru" or "Wind is the supreme guide." Pavan Guru is a collaboration with the amazing singer songwriter Alexis Harte. According to Kurrent Music, "Alexis Harte is a rare multi-dimensional talent that succeeds in many diverse musical challenges and environments." I can attest that he really puts his soul into his music. You can learn more about him on his website: http://www.alexisharte.com/. His colleague Stephen Spies helped out and played the violin on this track and I am much grateful for his contribution as well.

Translation

Wind is Guru, Water is Father,
and Earth, the Great Mother.
Day and night are the two caretakers
In whose lap all the world is at play.

Good deeds and bad deeds
are spoken in presence of Dharma
Through one’s action,
one can be near or far

Those who remember Satnaam
through their hard work
They have radiant faces
And spread their radiance to others

Interpretation by Bhai Gurdas

In the following 5th pauri of his 6th vaar, Bhai Gurdas expands on Guru Nanak's shloka, Pavan Guru Pani Pita:

ਪਉਣ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ।
The Guru's word is the air, the Guru and wondrous lord has recited Word the Guru.

The father of man is water which by flowing downwards teaches humility.

The earth being tolerant like mother is the mother and is the further base of all the creatures.

The day and night are the nurses who keep the people of child-wisdom busy in the plays of the world.

The life of Gurmukh is meaningful because he in the holy congregation has lost his egotism.

He becoming liberated in life behaves in the 'world with the skill to come out of the cycle of transrnigration.

The mother of the gurmukhs is the wisdom of the Guru and father, the contentment through whom they attain deliverance.

Forbearance and the sense of duty are their brothers, and meditation, austerities, continence the sons.

The Guru and the disciple are diffused into one another in equanimity and they both are the extension of the perfect supreme Lord.

Raving realized the supreme pleasure they have made others also realize the same.

Breath Ripens The Unripe Grapes Within

A couple of gems Rumi gems, recently posted to Sunlight:

Love of the dead does not last,
because the dead will not return.
But love of the living
is in every moment fresher than a bud,
both to the inward and the outward eye.
Choose the love of that Living One who is everlasting,
who offers you the wine that increases life.
Do not say, "We have no entrance to that King."
Dealings with the generous are not difficult.

Version by Camille and Kabir Helminski "Rumi: Daylight" Threshold Books, 1994

The hearty unripe grapes, capable of ripening,
at last become one in heart by the breath of the masters of heart.
They grow rapidly to grapehood, shedding duality and hatred and strife.
Then in maturity, they rend their skins, till they become one:
unity is the proper attribute for one who is one with others.
