ਜੋਗੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋਗਵੈ ਭੋਗੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਖਾਇ ॥
ਤਪੀਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਪੁ ਕਰੇ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥

ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦੜਾ ਸੁਣੀਜੈ ਭਾਈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬਹੈ ਅਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਜੈਸਾ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਲੁਣੇ ਜੋ ਖਟੇ ਸੋੁ ਖਾਇ ॥

जोगी होवै जोगवै भोगी होवै खाऎ ॥
तपीया होवै तप करे तीरथ मल मल नाऎ ॥१॥

तेरा सदड़ा सुणीजै भाई जे को बहै अलाऎ ॥१॥ रहाओ ॥

जैसा बीजै सो लुणे जो खटे सो खाऎ ॥
अगै पुछ न होवई जे सण नीसाणै जाऎ ॥२॥

तैसो जैसा काढीऐ जैसी कार कमाऎ ॥
जो दम चिति न आवई सो दम बिरथा जाऎ ॥३॥

इहो तन वेची बै करी जे को लए विकाऎ ॥

Shabad in English
Jogī hovai jogvai bẖogī hovai kẖāe.
Ŧapī▫ā hovai ṯap kare ṯirath mal mal nāe. ||1||

Ŧerā saḏṛā suṇījai bẖāī je ko bahai alāe. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Jaisā bījai so luṇe jo kẖate so kẖāe.
Agai pucẖẖ na hovaī je saṇ nīsāṇai jāe. ||2||

Ŧaiso jaisā kādẖīai jaisī kār kamāe.
Jo ḏam cẖiṯ na āvī so ḏam birthā jāe. ||3||

Eh ṯan vecẖī bai karī je ko lae vikāe.

The Yogi practices yoga, and the pleasure-seeker practices eating.
The austere practice austerities, bathing and rubbing themselves at sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ||1||

Let me hear some news of You, O Beloved; if only someone would come and sit with me, and tell me. ||1||Pause||

As one plants, so does he harvest; whatever he earns, he eats.
In the world hereafter, his account is not called for, if he goes with the insignia of the Lord. ||2||

According to the actions the mortal commits, so is he proclaimed.
And that breath which is drawn without thinking of the Lord, that breath goes in vain. ||3||

I would sell this body, if someone would only purchase it.
O Nanak, that body is of no use at all, if it does not enshrine the Name of the True Lord. ||4||5||7||

ਤਿਆਗੀ ਤਿਆਗ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੇਟੂ ਖਾਈ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਤਪੱਸਵੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਤਪੱਸਿਆ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਮ ਅਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਮਲ ਮਲ ਕੇ ਨਹਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। 
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਣਸੋ ਸੁਣਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ! ਜੇਕਰ ਕੋਈ ਬਹਿ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੱਸੇ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ। 
ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਵੱਢਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁਛ ਉਹ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਏਦੂੰ ਮਗਰੋਂ, ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ, ਜੋ ਉਥੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਝੰਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। 
ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਹੜਾ ਸਾਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਾਹ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। 
ਜੇਕਰ ਕੋਈ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਇਸ ਦੇਹ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੀ ਖਾਤਰ ਵੇਚ, ਵੇਚ ਦੇਵਾਂਗਾ। ਨਾਨਕ, ਉਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ।

I am participating in an event organized by Oneness USA at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on Nov 23. The organizers requested me to sing Satgur Nanak Pargateya for a portion of the program, so I made a composition yesterday and recorded myself practicing it (video below).

This is the 157th composition for this year; most of the compositions are that of or about Guru Nanak. Its been a wonderful year of singing!





Bhai Gurdas' love for Guru Nanak shines through this one.

Sathguru Nanak pargateya miti dund jag chanan hoya 
With the emergence of the true Guru Nanak, the mist cleared and the light scattered all around. 

Jiou(n) kar sooraj nikaliaa thaarae shhapae a(n)dhhaer paloaa

As if at the sun rise the stars disappeared and the darkness dispelled. 

Si(n)gh bukae miragaavalee bha(n)nee jaaeae n dhheer dhharoaa
With the roar of the lion in the forest the flocks of escaping deer now cannot have endurance. 

Jithhai baabaa pair dhharai poojaa aasan thhaapan soaa
Wherever Baba put his feet, a religious place was erected and established. 

Sidhh aasan sabh jagath dhae naanak aadh mathae jae koaa
All the siddh-places now have been renamed on the name of Nanak. 

Ghar ghar a(n)dhar dhharamasaal hovai keerathan sadhaa visoaa
Everyhome has become a place of dharma where singing. 

Baabae thaarae chaar chak na kha(n)dd prithhamee sachaa dtoaa
Baba liberated all four directions and nine divisions of earth. 

Guramukh kal vich paragatt hoaa 
Gurmukh (Guru Nanak) has emerged in this kaliyug, the dark age.


This album is in celebration of the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor, a visa-free access for the lovers of Guru Nanak to go from India to the Pakistani town of Kartarpur, where Guru Nanak spent the last 18 years of his life. Much thanks to Janapriyan Levine who helped arrange a couple of the shabads in this album, and also to Jeremy Marais and Abhijit Chakraborty for playing the Saxophone and Bass respectively in one shabad each.

Dear friends ... my celebration for #GuruNanak550 continues as I release a new colorful album today, "Rang Rataa," which has five shabads in five different colors. Rang means color, and rataa means imbued.


The first shabad, Rang Rataa, which was released earlier this year as a single, features one of the best finger guitarists in the US and my wonderful friend, Muriel Anderson. This is one of the two compositions of this shabad ... the other one in Raag Shri is still in the making. The other four shabads are in the raag that Guru Nanak used to sing in.

My special gratitude to my dear friend Ahsan Ali for pouring his immense love and co-producing Mere Laal Rangeele in Raag Tukhari (a raag that Guru Nanak composed himself). In Mera Prabh Raang Guru Nanak uses Rajasthani and is sung in Raag Parbhati.

Kusambhare is a Baba Sheikh Farid shabad about the impermanence of life like the color of a flower, which Guru Nanak used to sing in Raag Suhi Lalit. This is a new take on this raag and I will explain at some point why I believe Guru Nanak sang it like this. The last shabad, "Manjeethra" in Raag Suhi is a direct response of Guru Nanak to the previous shabad "Kusambhare" and talks about how the color of Name is "Manjeethra" or permanent despite the impermanence of life.

These couplets are found in the the Asa ki vaar. I see this as a dialog between Guru Nanak and Guru Angad emphasizing the significance of the Guru. 

Guru Nanak says, "I absolutely love my Guru. For it does not even take him an instant to infuse divinity into ordinary humans."

And Guru Angad responds,  "Even if 100 moons grew, and 1000 suns rose, without the Guru it would be pitch dark."

The Guru Granth Sahib has many such conversations between enlightened beings.  It is wonderful to be sitting amidst these conversations. 

Balhaari Gur Aapne - Recordings and Composition


Here is a recording of this shabad. I completed this composition as part of celebrating Guru Nanak's 550th birth anniversary.  I really love the groove the Guru inspired me to create for this composition.  This is one of the shabads where I have played the bansuri myself:

I heard some people got together today in Kartarpur to commemorate the 480th death anniversary of Guru Nanak. This reminds me of this incident with my grandfather, Papaji and his brother, Chachaji.  While Chachaji who was only two years younger to Papaji, he was a lot more active and seemed a lot more younger. They had a very funny and frank relationship.  So that day, Chachaji reminded Papaji that he should write his will, just in case "something" happens. He also suggested that he should leave Chachaji instructions on how to execute the will.  Papaji thought about it for a bit, and with a straight face quipped, "Who knows if I will die first or you?" It left Chachaji startled and it became a story that was told and retold in the family. I remember Papaji very sad remembering this when Chachaji actually died suddenly while Papaji was around.

Coincidently, recently I completed an album that includes 5 poems of Guru Nanak that deal with death. In the first line of the first poem, Guru Nanak says, "Who can we really complain to? God doesn't ask anyone before he takes someone away."

Today is my little sister Simer’s wedding in India. While I couldn’t attend in person, I am celebrating with the release of “Saajan” - an album with 5 shabads. Saajan means “Beloved”. The cover concept and design is by my 13 year old daughter Jania. It shows Guru Nanak and his Rebab playing bard, Bhai Mardana. Superimposed on this is Simer’s wedding dress. The colors coordinate with the Raags in the album.


I’m grateful to five musicians have contributed to this: Ahsan Ali (Sarangi and vocals), Rajesh Prasanna (Bansuri), Jeremy Marais (Saxophone), Rajvinder Singh (Tabla), and Abhijit Chakraborty (Bass).

"So God lives in the colors around us," said my 5 year old daughter when she heard this shabad by Guru Nanak. Lyrics and Translations are at the end.

My Lord and Master is filled with love. His love is everywhere and in everything.
He is the one who enjoys, and He is also the enjoyment itself. He captures everyone's heart.
He is like both the bride and the groom in a wedding. He is like the fisherman and the fish, the water, and the net. He loves in many different ways. He is my Beloved, and He brings joy to all.
Nanak prays, please listen to my prayer: You are like a peaceful pool, and You are the graceful swan.
You are like a beautiful lotus in the daytime and a lovely water-lily at night. You see and experience everything and bloom with happiness.

Discovering Divine Unity With Guru Nanak

The poem by Guru Nanak beautifully encapsulates the idea of oneness with all creation and the presence of God within this unity. Guru Nanak's verses emphasize the omnipresence of God, suggesting that God is not a distant entity but rather an intrinsic part of every aspect of existence. This concept aligns with the broader spiritual belief that we are interconnected with all living beings and the entire universe, and that the divine essence can be found within this interconnectedness.

God is the ultimate source of love and enjoyment, permeating and pervading all. This imagery signifies that every aspect of creation is infused with the divine presence. When Guru Nanak describes God as both the bride and bridegroom, the fisherman and the fish, or the water and the net, it symbolizes the idea that God is not separate from these elements but rather the essence that animates them. This mirrors the belief that God is not just present in grand moments or holy places but is inherent in the everyday, mundane aspects of life. It implies that recognizing God's presence requires a shift in perspective, a realization that divinity is not something to be sought externally but rather discovered within the interconnected fabric of existence.

The poem also touches upon the theme of love and devotion. Guru Nanak's depiction of God's love for all beings and the soul-brides' longing for God reinforces the idea that the divine connection is deeply personal and accessible to all. It suggests that by recognizing the oneness of all creation, individuals can experience a profound connection with God, much like a soul-bride's union with her Beloved. This spiritual union implies that when we see the divine within ourselves and others, we can cultivate a sense of unity, compassion, and love, reinforcing the belief that God resides within the oneness of creation itself.

In essence through this poem I am reminded that I am not separate from the universe or from God. I am interconnected with all of creation and the presence of God within this oneness.

He Himself is the Enjoyer, and He Himself is the Enjoyment. He Himself is the Ravisher of all.

रंगि रता मेरा साहिबु रवि रहिआ भरपूरि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Rang raṯā merā sāhib rav rahiā bẖarpūr. ||1|| rahā o.
My Lord and Master is imbued with love; He is totally permeating and pervading all. ||1||Pause||


ਆਪੇ ਮਾਛੀ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਆਪੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਜਾਲੁ ॥
आपे माछी मछुली आपे पाणी जालु ॥
Āpe mācẖẖī macẖẖulī āpe pāṇī jāl.
He Himself is the fisherman and the fish; He Himself is the water and the net.

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਲ ਮਣਕੜਾ ਆਪੇ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਲਾਲੁ ॥੨॥
आपे जाल मणकड़ा आपे अंदरि लालु ॥२॥
Āpe jāl maṇkaṛā āpe anḏar lāl. ||2||
He Himself is the sinker, and He Himself is the bait. ||2||

ਆਪੇ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਰੰਗੁਲਾ ਸਖੀਏ ਮੇਰਾ ਲਾਲੁ ॥
आपे बहु बिधि रंगुला सखीए मेरा लालु ॥
Āpe baho biḏẖ rangulā sakẖī e merā lāl.
He Himself loves in so many ways. O sister soul-brides, He is my Beloved.

ਨਿਤ ਰਵੈ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਦੇਖੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਹਾਲੁ ॥੩॥
नित रवै सोहागणी देखु हमारा हालु ॥३॥
Niṯ ravai sohāgaṇī ḏekẖ hamārā hāl. ||3||
He continually ravishes and enjoys the happy soul-brides; just look at the plight I am in without Him! ||3||

ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਤੂ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਤੂ ਹੰਸੁ ॥
प्रणवै नानकु बेनती तू सरवरु तू हंसु ॥
Paraṇvai Nānak benṯī ṯū sarvar ṯū hans.
Prays Nanak, please hear my prayer: You are the pool, and You are the soul-swan.

Khasam Ki Bani, a phrase used by Guru Nanak to describe his own poetry, means "Words of my Love". The project started off as a musical celebration of Guru Nanak's 550th birth anniversary. 



Singing Guru Nanak

As long as I sing, I live. As soon as I forget, I die
- Guru Nanak, Raag Asa

On the occasion of Guru Nanak's 550th birth anniversary celebrations, I decide to spend a year meditating upon the words and music of Guru Nanak.  I commence excitedly, focusing on the light that is brighter than one hundred moons and one thousand suns combined.  This is the light of Guru Nanak’s prayer, the universal Aarti with the stars studded in the sky’s platter. 

I decide to sing Guru Nanak completely this year. The initial plan is to record 55 new compositions.  I think this to be momentous because normally I can only do 10-12 compositions in a year. This is also momentous because I will sing shabads that are rarely heard and expound raagas rarely explored. But mostly it is momentous because I will live with the sweet words of the Guru and have them recorded for myself to hear for the rest of my life.
 
I start out with a live recording of an album. I invite 5 musicians to my home to record an improvisation album of the Mool Mantra.  And then I move on to Guru Nanak's shabads, from Rang Rataa to Haun Dhadi and so on. Indeed, like universal power he sings for, his songs are multicolored.  They are filled with humility and love, courage and fortitude, truth and bliss. Satnam!

Days go by, weeks and then months. I am enjoying this a lot compared to previous years. Instead of meandering through the various colors of the oneness randomly. Through singing Guru Nanak, I am focused on singing One, singing Ek Onkaar, singing Naam. 

Within a few months, I realize things are going really well, and music is descending upon me faster than it ever has. I am loving it, and I don’t want to count where I am to see if I am done with 55. That would be very sad. I don’t want it to end. So, I remove the numbered list on my laptop. I stop counting my compositions. Singing Guru Nanak cannot be caged in limits. Akaal!

Now with about a month left for Guru Nanak’s 550th anniversary, I have far exceeded my original number of compositions. But I feel like I have not even the scratched the surface of the Guru's ocean. I have not even begun the sing Guru Nanak. 

His message is precipitating upon me. Singing is his life and singing is his lesson. Different shabads and raags are amalgamating into one. The simplicity of his message is amazingly elegant. Remember Naam sings Baba Nanak. That is his only message. Just that one. One! No other ritual is needed, no higher prayer, no sweeter song, no farther travel, no purer cleansing, no quieter silence, and no fuller symphony.

Remember Naam is the incessant song weaved through all Remember Your True Essence he chants in all his words. In all kinds of darkness, the best answer is to sing the true essence. And no one is bereft of this true essence. At the Guru’s gate everyone is singing. Everything is singing.  The wind singing in its blowing. The water sings in its flowing. The fire sings in its burning. The planets sing in their revolving. I sing too, or do I? 

Now this singing continues and promises never to end. I used to think I sing, but with the Guru’s grace the singing just happens to me.  While I think I am singing Guru Nanak, it is actually Guru Nanak singing. Aakhan Jor Chupai Na Jor. Living that is momentous.

Next year in November, it will be the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the illumined soul of my music and life. I am hearing of plans of celebrations all over the world ... But why wait until next year? Why not have a year long musical celebration??? I am diving right in, right now!!! 

This week, I start with a beautiful poem by Bhai Gurdas, "Kal Taaran Gur Nanak Aaya" in Raag Bageshri. I have been singing this since the 1990s, and I had recorded this first in 2009. I re-recorded this in the past few days. There will be a lot more in the coming weeks ...

ਸੁਣੀ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਗ ਮਾਹਿ ਪਠਾਇਆ
Sunee Pukaari Daatar Prabhu Guru Naanak Jag Maahi Pathhaaiaa
The benefactor Lord listened to the cries (of humanity) and sent Guru Nanak to this world.

ਚਰਨ ਧੋਇ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਚਰਣਾਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਿਖਾਂ ਪੀਲਾਇਆ 
Charan Dhoi Raharaasi Kari Charanamritu Sikhaan Peelaaiaa 
He washed His feet, eulogised God and got his Disciples drink the ambrosia of his feet. 

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਇਕ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ
Paarabrahamu Pooran Brahamu Kalijugi Andari Iku Dikhaaiaa 
He preached in this darkage (kaliyug) that, saragun (Brahm) and nirgun (Parbrahm) are the same and identical. 

ਚਾਰੇ ਪੈਰ ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਚਾਰਿ ਵਰਨ ਇਕ ਵਰਨੁ ਕਰਾਇਆ
Chaaray Pair Dharam Day Chaari Varani Iku Varanu Karaaiaa
Dharma was now established on its four feet and all the four castes (through fraternal feeling) were converted into one caste (of humanity). 

ਰਾਣਾ ਰੰਕ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਵਣਾ ਜਗਿ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ
Raanaa Ranku Baraabaree Pairee Paavanaa Jagi Varataaiaa
Equating the poor with the prince, he spread the etiquette of humbly touching the feet. 

ਉਲਟਾ ਖੇਲੁ ਪਿਰੰਮ ਦਾ ਪੈਰਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਸੀਸੁ ਨਿਵਾਇਆ
Ulataa Khaylu Piranm Daa Pairaa Upari Seesu Nivaaiaa
Inverse is the game of the beloved; he got the egotist high heads bowed to feet. 

ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਬਾਬੇ ਤਾਰਿਆ ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ ਪੜ੍ਹਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ
Kalijugu Baabay Taariaa Satinaamu Parhhi Mantr Sunaaiaa
Baba Nanak rescued this dark age (kaliyug) and recited ‘satinam’ mantr for one and all.

Happy Gurpurab folks!!! I have been singing Bhai Gurdas' Vaar Kal Taaran Guru Nanak Aaya in Bageshree since the mid-90s. My interpretation of this Vaar


How fortunate am I
The supreme giver 
has infinite mercy upon me
and sent for me none other 
than my dear Guru Nanak
to be my guide

My Guru travels far
and learns from the learned
He is the wisest I've know
still he meets everyone
with a peculiar humility 
strange to our world
How fortunate am I

And he teaches me 
the way to learn by example
He travels many million miles.
And when his feet are washed
Particles of his noble ways
make sweet ambrosial nectar
a drop of which I get to drink
How fortunate am I

With that luminious drop
all fog starts to disappear
Himself my dear Guru shows me
there is no difference betwee
one who knows everything
and the mysterious one
that no one can fully fathom
How fortunate am I

This world of ours has
those of different religions
those of disparate social strata
some rich live the lives of king
others, paupers, just survive
they have all, in one drop.,
through his blessed vision

Based on a request in the comments area, following is the notation for one of the guitar parts -- the actual notation is tough to read and play -- but this is a simplified version that works as well. Every two bars is one line of the shabad as follows:

Sometime last year I heard this haunting melody from Nirinjan Kaur ... and fell in love with it. Since then I have been singing it and recording it and adding instruments to it gradually. Thanks to Rajesh Prasanna for his bansuri, Kimberly Foree for her oboe and Christine Linge for background vocals. 


A note about the translation on the video -- it is not possible to translate gurbani so these are just my feelings while singing this shabad. These can change depending on the day I sing it. It is just a snapshot of what my thinking was one day. If you really want to understand the meaning of the shabad, I encourage you to do your own interpretation ...

ਸਮਰਥ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਹਥੁ ਧਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥  
समरथ गुरू सिरि हथु धर्यउ ॥  
Samrath gurū sir hath ḏẖaryao.  
The All-powerful Guru placed His hand upon my head.  

ਸਿਰਿ = ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ।
ਸਮਰੱਥ ਗੁਰੂ (ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ) ਨੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਦੇ) ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੱਥ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ।

ਗੁਰਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਅਉ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਚਰੰਨ ਅਘੰਨ ਹਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥  
गुरि कीनी क्रिपा हरि नामु दीअउ जिसु देखि चरंन अघंन हर्यउ ॥  
Gur kīnī kirpā har nām ḏī▫a▫o jis ḏekẖ cẖarann agẖann har▫ya▫o.  
The Guru was kind, and blessed me with the Lord's Name. Gazing upon His Feet, my sins were dispelled.  

ਗੁਰਿ = ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ। ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਚਰੰਨ = ਜਿਸ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ। ਅਘੰਨ = ਪਾਪ। ਹਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ = ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ।
ਜਿਸ (ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ) ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਪਾਪ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ) ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੈ;


ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਏਕ ਸਮਾਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਸੁ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਨੇ ਸੁਤੁ ਭਾਨ ਡਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥  
निसि बासुर एक समान धिआन सु नाम सुने सुतु भान डर्यउ ॥  
Nis bāsur ek samān ḏẖi▫ān so nām sune suṯ bẖān dar▫ya▫o.  
Night and day, the Guru meditates on the One Lord; hearing His Name, the Messenger of Death is scared away.  

ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁਰ = ਰਾਤ ਦਿਨ। ਬਾਸੁਰ = ਦਿਨ। ਏਕ ਸਮਾਨ = ਇੱਕ-ਰਸ। ਸੁਤੁ ਭਾਨ = ਸੂਰਜ ਦਾ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ, ਜਮ। ਭਾਨ = ਸੂਰਜ। ਸੁਨੇ = ਸੁਨਿ, ਸੁਣ ਕੇ।
(ਉਸ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਦਾ) ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਇੱਕ-ਰਸ ਧਿਆਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸੁਣਨ ਨਾਲ ਜਮ-ਰਾਜ (ਭੀ) ਡਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ)।


ਭਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਸੁ ਆਸ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਭੇਟਿ ਪਰਸੁ ਕਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥  
भनि दास सु आस जगत्र गुरू की पारसु भेटि परसु कर्यउ ॥  
Bẖan ḏās so ās jagṯar gurū kī pāras bẖet paras kar▫ya▫o.  
So speaks the Lord's slave: Guru Raam Daas placed His Faith in Guru Amar Daas, the Guru of the World; touching the Philosopher's Stone, He was transformed into the Philosopher's Stone.  

ਭਨਿ = ਆਖ। ਦਾਸ = ਹੇ ਦਾਸ (ਨਲ੍ਯ੍ਯ) ਕਵੀ! ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੂ = ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਗੁਰੂ। ਪਾਰਸੁ ਭੇਟਿ = ਪਾਰਸ (ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ) ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ। ਪਰਸੁ = ਪਰਸਨ-ਯੋਗ (ਪਾਰਸੁ)। ਕਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ = ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ (ਨਲ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਕਵੀ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੇਵਲ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਆਸ ਹੈ, ਪਾਰਸ (ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ) ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਭੀ ਪਰਸਨ-ਜੋਗ (ਪਾਰਸ ਹੀ) ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ।


ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਸਤਿ ਕੀਯਉ ਸਮਰਥ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਹਥੁ ਧਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥੭॥੧੧॥  
रामदासु गुरू हरि सति कीयउ समरथ गुरू सिरि हथु धर्यउ ॥७॥११॥  
Rāmḏās gurū har saṯ kī▫ya▫o samrath gurū sir hath ḏẖar▫ya▫o. ||7||11||  
Guru Raam Daas recognized the Lord as True; the All-powerful Guru placed His hand upon His head. ||7||11||

I decided to spend a year to spend a year working on compositions of Guru Nanak for #GuruNanak550. Someone asked me write about this experience and this is what I said:

And then I move on to Guru Nanak's shabads, from Vadde Mere Sahiba in Raag Asa to Har Bin Jio in Raag Sri to Haun Dhadi in Raag Majh and so on. Like Rang Rataa, the universal power he sings for, Guru Nanak songs are multicolored. They are filled with humility and love, courage and fortitude, truth and bliss. The words are so apt for me. Every one touches the heart. I find it truly amazing that the Guru writes these shabads for me. Often I am just left in wonder. Waheguru Satnam!

Likewise, in acceptance, I sing too. I sing because what better purpose of life there is. I sing Tere Gun Gaavaan as it was sung by Bhai Samund Singh a hundred years ago. Like Guru Nanak did 500 years ago. Or do I? 

I used to think I sing, but with the Guru’s grace the singing just happens. The Guru just sings and I float in his boat. He takes me across ... Gur Taar Taaranhareya like he did in Ramkali 50 years ago. The decision is not mine. The singing is not mine either. All power is His. Aakhan Jor Chupai Na Jor. Singing Guru Nanak for a year is impossible. This singing continues and promises never to end. Such grace upon me is momentous.
