Moko Taar Le Rama Taar Le

For speaking before the video:

These words come from Bhagat Namdev,
the poet and philosopher who was born
750 years ago this month ...

who sang in the simple languages
that common people understood
Marathi, Punjabi, Hindi ...

who danced through his kirtan
and lighted the lamp
of true knowledge
for the world

who spread the message
of oneness in haunting melodies
that were incensed with the Indian soil ...

who continues to guide us
like the dhruv taara,
the north star,

for those who desire
to cross the ocean of life
to reach the most joyous shore

Moko Taar Le

Lyrics

Mo kao ṯār le rāmā ṯār le.
Mai ajān jan ṯaribe na jāno bāp bīṯẖulā bāh ḏe. ||1|| rahāo.

Nar ṯe sur hoe jāṯ nimakẖ mai saṯgur buḏẖ sikẖlāī.
Nar ṯe upaj surag kao jīṯio so avkẖaḏẖ mai pāī. ||1||

Jahā jahā ḏẖūa nāraḏ teke naik tikāvahu mohi.
Ŧere nām avilamb bahuṯ jan uḏẖre nāme kī nij maṯ eh. ||2||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

I am ignorant, and I do not know how to swim.
O my Beloved Father, please give me Your arm. ||1||Pause||

I have been transformed from a mortal being into an angel, in an instant;
the True Guru has taught me this.

Born of human flesh, I have conquered the heavens;
such is the medicine I was given. ||1||

Please place me where You placed
Dhroo and Naarad, O my Master.

With the Support of Your Name, so many have been saved;
this is Naam Dayv's understanding. ||2||3||

Sansaar Samunde

Lyrics

Lobẖ lahar aṯ nījẖar bājai.
Kāiā dūbai kesvā. ||1||

Sansār samunḏe ṯār gobinḏe.
Ŧār lai bāp bīṯẖulā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Anil beṛā hao kẖev na sākao.
Ŧerā pār na pāiā bīṯẖulā. ||2||

Hohu ḏaiāl saṯgur mel ṯū mo kao.
Pār uṯāre kesvā. ||3||

Nāmā kahai hao ṯar bẖī na jāno.
Mo kao bāh ḏėh bāh ḏėh bīṯẖulā. ||4||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

The tidal waves of greed constantly assault me.
My body is drowning, O Lord. ||1||

Please carry me across the world-ocean, O Lord of the Universe.
Carry me across, O Beloved Father. ||1||Pause||

I cannot steer my ship in this storm.
I cannot find the other shore, O Beloved Lord. ||2||

Please be merciful, and unite me with the True Guru;
carry me across, O Lord. ||3||

Says Naam Dayv, I do not know how to swim.
Give me Your Arm, give me Your Arm, O Beloved Lord. ||4||2||

Kaise Man Tarega Re

Lyrics

Pārbarahm jė cẖīnĥsī āsā ṯe na bẖāvsī.
Rāmā bẖagṯah cẖeṯīale acẖinṯ man rākẖsī. ||1||

Kaise man ṯarhigā re sansār sāgar bikẖai ko banā.
Jẖūṯẖī māiā ḏekẖ kai bẖūlā re manā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Cẖẖīpe ke gẖar janam ḏailā gur upḏes bẖailā.
Sanṯėh kai parsāḏ nāmā har bẖetulā. ||2||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

One who recognizes the Supreme Lord God, dislikes other desires.
He focuses his consciousness on the Lord's devotional worship, and keeps his mind free of anxiety. ||1||

O my mind, how will you cross over the world-ocean, if you are filled with the water of corruption?
Gazing upon the falseness of Maya, you have gone astray, O my mind. ||1||Pause||

You have given me birth in the house of a calico-printer, but I have found the Teachings of the Guru.
By the Grace of the Saint, Naam Dayv has met the Lord. ||2||5||

Moodh Manaa

Āsā mėhlā 1.
Ŧiṯ sarvaraṛai bẖaīle nivāsā pāṇī pāvak ṯinėh kīā.
Pankaj moh pag nahī cẖālai ham ḏekẖā ṯah dūbīale. ||1||

Man ek na cẖeṯas mūṛ manā.
Har bisraṯ ṯere guṇ galiā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Nā hao jaṯī saṯī nahī paṛiā mūrakẖ mugḏẖā janam bẖaiā.
Paraṇvaṯ Nānak ṯin kī sarṇā jin ṯū nāhī vīsriā. ||2||3||

Aasaa, Guru Nanak

In that pool, people have made their homes, but the water there is as hot as fire!
In the swamp of emotional attachment, their feet cannot move. I have seen them drowning there. ||1||

In your mind, you do not remember the One Lord-you fool!
You have forgotten the Lord; your virtues shall wither away. ||1||Pause||

I am not celibate, nor truthful, nor scholarly. I was born foolish and ignorant into this world.
Prays Nanak, I seek the Sanctuary of those who have not forgotten You, O Lord! ||2||3||

Saranjaam Laag Bhavjan Taran Kai

Āsā mėhlā 5.

Bẖaī parāpaṯ mānukẖ ḏehurīā.
Gobinḏ milaṇ kī ih ṯerī barīā.
Avar kāj ṯerai kiṯai na kām.
Mil sāḏẖsangaṯ bẖaj keval nām. ||1||

Saraʼnjām lāg bẖavjal ṯaran kai.
Janam baritha jāṯ rang māiā kai. ||1|| rahāo.

Jap ṯap sanjam ḏẖaram na kamāiā.
Sevā sāḏẖ na jāniā har rāiā.
Kaho Nānak ham nīcẖ karammā.
Saraṇ pare kī rākẖo sarmā. ||2||4||

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:

This human body has been given to you.
This is your chance to meet the Lord of the Universe. Nothing else will work.
Join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy;
vibrate and meditate on the Jewel of the Naam. ||1||

Make every effort to cross over this terrifying world-ocean.
You are squandering this life uselessly in the love of Maya. ||1||Pause||

I have not practiced meditation, self-discipline, self-restraint or righteous living.
I have not served the Holy; I have not acknowledged the Lord, my King.
Says Nanak, my actions are contemptible!
O Lord, I seek Your Sanctuary; please, preserve my honor! ||2||4||
