Kuchh Hosh Bhi Hai Ae Dast-e-junoon

O inciter of passion (craziness), do you know what happened?
The neck is so torn it has reached the skirt

Oh God, such innocence, such carelessnesss
They come to his dead body and ask what happened?

Did I see you or did I die?
There used to be a heart, who knows what happened!

No one should exceed their limits in love.
The drop that blows into a bubble bursts!

Come on 'Asir', now this is what occupies
One cries and the other asks what happened

Lyrics in English: Kuch hosh bhi hai dast-e-junoon dekh kya hua

Kuch hosh bhi hai dast-e-junoon dekh kya hua
Daaman tak aa gaya hai garebaan phataa hua

Allah re ye kamsini itnaa nahin khayal
Mayyat pe aake poochhte hain inko kya hua

Nazr-e-adaa hua, ki niyaaz-e-qaza hua
Pehlu mein ek dil tha khuda jaane kya hua

Aao 'Asir' ab to yahi mashgala sahi
Ek roye aur dusara pooche ke kya hua

Guru Ramdas story is that of an unparalleled union, a royal union. One that was seen with Guru Nanak, Guru Angad and Guru Amardas. One that served all the lovers of Oneness. A union that was won by the spear of wisdom and protected by truth.  A union of all ages, past and future — under the tent pitched by the true guru. So, a union that is truly royal because it is timeless.

That is what is described in this shabad.  This is a shabad that was composed last week. I recorded the vocals live and then recorded some instruments for backing up. Enjoy!

Eho Raaj Jog Gur Ramdas - Lyrics and Traditional Translation

The Guru has pitched the tent; under it, all the ages are gathered.

Chief Seattle (c. 1786 – June 7, 1866) was a Suquamish and Duwamish chief. A leading figure among his people, he pursued a path of accommodation to white settlers, forming a personal relationship with "Doc" Maynard. The city of Seattle, in the U.S. state of Washington, was named after him.

The following widely publicized speech arguing in favor of ecological responsibility and respect of Native Americans' land rights had been attributed to him.  The speech was believed to have been given in December, 1854. There are several versions of this letter.  Presumably, the generally accepted version of the above speech was published in the The Irish Times on June 4th, 1976. However, many people now believe that the speech was actually written by a Hollywood screen writer in the 1970's for the movie Home - Four Wagons West. It is thought that the script was based on the original statement by Chief Seattle in 1854.

Chief Seattle's Letter

"The President in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land. But how can you buy or sell the sky? the land? The idea is strange to us. If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them?

Every part of the earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every meadow, every humming insect. All are holy in the memory and experience of my people.

We know the sap which courses through the trees as we know the blood that courses through our veins. We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters. The bear, the deer, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the dew in the meadow, the body heat of the pony, and man all belong to the same family.

The shining water that moves in the streams and rivers is not just water, but the blood of our ancestors. If we sell you our land, you must remember that it is sacred. Each glossy reflection in the clear waters of the lakes tells of events and memories in the life of my people. The water's murmur is the voice of my father's father.

The rivers are our brothers. They quench our thirst. They carry our canoes and feed our children. So you must give the rivers the kindness that you would give any brother.

If we sell you our land, remember that the air is precious to us, that the air shares its spirit with all the life that it supports. The wind that gave our grandfather his first breath also received his last sigh. The wind also gives our children the spirit of life. So if we sell our land, you must keep it apart and sacred, as a place where man can go to taste the wind that is sweetened by the meadow flowers.

Will you teach your children what we have taught our children? That the earth is our mother? What befalls the earth befalls all the sons of the earth.

This we know: the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.

One thing we know: our God is also your God. The earth is precious to him and to harm the earth is to heap contempt on its creator.

Your destiny is a mystery to us. What will happen when the buffalo are all slaughtered? The wild horses tamed? What will happen when the secret corners of the forest are heavy with the scent of many men and the view of the ripe hills is blotted with talking wires? Where will the thicket be? Gone! Where will the eagle be? Gone! And what is to say goodbye to the swift pony and then hunt? The end of living and the beginning of survival.

When the last red man has vanished with this wilderness, and his memory is only the shadow of a cloud moving across the prairie, will these shores and forests still be here? Will there be any of the spirit of my people left?

We love this earth as a newborn loves its mother's heartbeat. So, if we sell you our land, love it as we have loved it. Care for it, as we have cared for it. Hold in your mind the memory of the land as it is when you receive it. Preserve the land for all children, and love it, as God loves us.

As we are part of the land, you too are part of the land. This earth is precious to us. It is also precious to you.

One thing we know - there is only one God. No man, be he Red man or White man, can be apart. We ARE all brothers after all."

I get this question often: when are you releasing the next audio/video/album. Unfortunately I generally have very little clue as to when my next release is coming out unless its close to getting done. The reason is that I keep working on the music until I feel like I have been removed from the composition and the Guru has appeared.  Only the Guru knows when He will appear.

This Workshop has now been completed!

The Music

The original composition that this melody is inspired from was from Bhai Gopal Singh Ragi. This is one of the shabads I loved listening to from childhood and I have put my own twist to the melody and especially the arrangement. While the shlok is listed under Raag Sorath in the Guru Granth Sahib, Bhai Gopal Singh ji composed this in Raag Bhairavi.

The Shabad

This shabad is actually a Shlok written by Guru Amar Das from Guru Ram Das' Vaar, Sorath Ki Vaar:

Salok mėhlā 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:

Saṯgur kī sevā safal hai je ko kare cẖiṯ lāe.
Service to the True Guru is fruitful and rewarding, if one performs it with his mind focused on it.

Man cẖinḏiā fal pāvṇā haumai vicẖahu jāe.
The fruits of the mind's desires are obtained, and egotism departs from within.

Banḏẖan ṯoṛai mukaṯ hoe sacẖe rahai samāe.
His bonds are broken, and he is liberated; he remains absorbed in the True Lord.

Is jag mėh nām alabẖ hai gurmukẖ vasai man āe.
It is so difficult to obtain the Naam in this world; it comes to dwell in the mind of the Gurmukh.

Nānak jo gur sevėh āpṇā hao ṯin balihārai jāo. ||1||
O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to one who serves his True Guru. ||1||

Another Shlok With Similar Beginning

There is another shabad that uses the first line. This one is also a Shlok by Guru Amar Das from a vaar in Bihaagra by Guru Ram Das.

Salok mėhlā 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:

Saṯgur kī sevā safal hai je ko kare cẖiṯ lāe.
Fruitful is service to the True Guru, if one does so with a sincere mind.

Nām paḏārath pāīai acẖinṯ vasai man āe.
The treasure of the Naam, is obtained, and the mind comes to be free of anxiety.

Janam maran ḏukẖ katīai haumai mamṯā jāe.
The pains of birth and death are eradicated, and the mind is rid of egotism and self-conceit.

Uṯam paḏvī pāīai sacẖe rahai samāe.
One achieves the ultimate state, and remains absorbed in the True Lord.

Nānak pūrab jin kao likẖiā ṯinā saṯgur miliā āe. ||1||
O Nanak, the True Guru comes and meets those who have such pre-ordained destiny. ||1||

I saw this beautiful photo of a bee on a flower, so enchantingly in tune with the colors of the bloom and the color of the noon, I was reminded of an Emily Dickinson’s poem (see below).

On first look it seems like the bee is idling, doing nothing of purpose.  It is striking how the idleness of the bee is a tune, much like it’s labor which is chant. And if that it all it was doing it would still be beautiful.  Even the ones that are waiting are serving reminds John Milton.  Just by being itself the bee sings. This singing is it’s true calling, it’s service of its truth. The service of the guru of truth is fruitful says Guru Amar Das. The service of the bee is fruitful. In singing this beautiful song of being itself the bee opens the door of heaven on earth, So Dar (Guru Nanak). That door beyond which everything sings, from the elements to the planets and the universe.

But if you carefully think about it, the bee is not just being beautiful and idling. It is pollinating the flowers.  She goes from flower to flower vanquishing them and  herself. She helps propagate her own species and plants. Her labor is true, it is the service of the guru. This is her song that maker her part of the eden she is creating on earth.

The Bee by Emily Dickinson

Like trains of cars on tracks of plush
I hear the level bee:
A jar across the flowers goes,
Their velvet masonry

Withstands until the sweet assault
Their chivalry consumes,
While he, victorious, tilts away
To vanquish other blooms.

His feet are shod with gauze,
His helmet is of gold;
His breast, a single onyx
With chrysoprase, inlaid.

His labor is a chant,
His idleness a tune;
Oh, for a bee’s experience
Of clovers and of noon!
